The examinations were carried out to determine the hygienic status and rejected rate of raw milk collected from three different milk plant of Chungnam province from 1989 to 1990. A total of 3,456 quarter milk samples out of 875 dairy cows from 132 herds (SCC more than 250,000cells/ml) were examined for bovine mastitis by using CMT solution. Milk samples from dairy cow infected with mastitis were also studied bacteriological and antibiotics susceptible tests against isolates.
The dairy cows were studied the curing effect of cloxacillin benzathine intramammary infusion during dry period.
The results obtained were summarized as follow:
1. The mean rejection rate of raw milk was 0.21%, Among the causes of rejection, rancidity was 93.3%; specific gravity 2.0%; TTC 0.6% and others 4.1%
2. Distributions of SCC of the bulk milk by the rolling ball viscometer were noted as 60.1% on the ranging below 250,000cells/ml; 19.2% on 250,000-500,000cells/ml; 12.2% on 500,000-1,250,000cells/ml; 8.5% on over 1,250,000cells/ml.
3. A total of 565(64.6%) of 875 dairy cows and 1,241(35.9%) of 3,456 quarters were found to be infected with bovine mastitis by CMT method.
4. The infective rates of bovine mastitis by parity time were significantly remarked(p<0.01) to 21.5% on the 1st parity; 36.8% on the 2nd-3rd; 44.8% on the over 4th.
5. A total of 692 strains of etiological agents were isolated from 616 infected quarters showing the CMT socre of ++ or +++. There were identified as 196 strains of Staphylococcus aureus(28.3%), 122 of Staphylococci(17.2%), 63 of Streptococcus agalactiae(9.1%), 32 of Streptococci(4.6%), 92 of Escherichia coli (13.3%), 67 of Corynebacterium spp. (9.7% ), 65 of Gram negative bacillus(9.4%), 19 of fungus(2.8%) and 36 of others(5.2% ).
6. A total of 637 strains of bacteria isolated from the infected quarters were examined for susceptibility test against 9 different antibiotics. All strains were highly susceptible to CF, GM and CL, but susceptibilty to PC, EM and TE was low.
7. In curing efficacy of intramammary infusion with cloxacillin benzathine during dry period, the rate of young animal was significantly increased more than olders(p<0.05). And the curing rate of infected quarters at the drying off was 68.0% but the new infections was only 19.3%.
8. New infection rate of non-infected quarters at the drying off was significantly reduced in the treated(3.9%) group compared with that of non-treated(20.5%) group (p<0.01).
