A serological survey was conducted to determine infection as well as immune status of layer and breeder flocks against most troublesome pathogen in the country namely Salmonella pullorum(SP). Mycoplasma gallisepticum(MG), Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV), Egg Drop Syndrome-76 Virus(EDSV) and Infectious Bursal Disease Virus(IBDV). For the survey 33 layer and breeder farms were selected from Gyeonggi province covering 10 districts. Blood samples were collected from layers of above 67 days of age and from breeders of more than 82 days of age. Serum plate agglutination method was used to detect antibodies to SP and MG which hemagglutination-inhibition(HI) test was applied for NDV and EDSV and immunodiffusion test for IBDV. The results are summarized as follows:
1. Among 1298 birds from 176 flocks tested for SP 27.8% and 80.1% were found to be seropositive on individual and flock basis respectively. Seropositive rate was highest in individual birds reared in Paju and Munsan districts,35.7% of the birds being positive while positive rate was highest in flocks in Ganghwa and Gimpo districts.
2. Among 981 chicks from 119 breeder flocks and 2295 chicks from 328 commercial layer flocks tested for MG, MS. In Breeder flocks,
Seropositive rate of MG was 42.1% on average in individual chicks examined and 75% on flock basis,
Seropositive rate of MS was 64.5% on average in individual chicks examined and 60% on flock basis.
Out of 10 districts Gwanghwa and Gimpo areas showed 30.6% of MG while on flock basis Chickens in Galmaeri and Janghyeon districts revealed highest positive rate, 73.3% of birds examined were positive to MG.
3. Out of 233 flocks tested 19.3% had HI titer of less than 4 log₂ against NDV. Among the flocks from 10 districts tested those reared in Pocheon Euijeongbu, Paju and Munsan districts showed considerably low HI titir, majority of them being less 4 log₂.
4. Out of 256 flocks surveyed 197 flocks (77%) were found to be not vaccinated against EDS-76 while the rest flocks were given EDS oil vaccine among the nonvaccinated flocks about 15.2% were having HI antibody titer of 3 log₂ or more, indicating that they were naturally infected with EDS’76. Expecially flocks raised in Yangju, Euijeengbu districts showed high EDS’76 seropositive rate despite of the fact that they had not been vaccinated against EDS-76. On the other hand 55.9% of the vaccinated flocks revealed HI titer of less than 4 log₂.
5. Out of 94 flocks surveyed 57 flocks (60.6%) were, shown to receive no IBD Vaccine. However, 72% of the nonvaccinated flocks were seropositive to IBDV. On individual basis 48.4% of nonvaccinated chickens had antibody to IBDV. The highest IBDV seropositive rate was seen in flock and individual birds in Yangju and Euijeongbu.
