‘Mu sok’, one of the oldest form of private religion, carries the meaning of both a primitive art which deeply indicate mankinds instinct desire in movement and religious character of a ancient large scale village.
Mu sok is a comprehensive art which possesses poetry, music and dance in an ancient art form, became the basis of our traditional culture. In other words, Mu sok can be described as a primitive form of modern Korean art and especially the dancing ingredient holds the roots modern Korean dance.
Unlike other gut dances Jinohgi gut dance differs itself in its variety in gut procedures, rite, tools. It is understood that when studying more in depth of the gut and its dramatic settings; variety of sounds, movements, music, masks, and other instruments could be utilized as a source to modern creative settings. This study has the purpose of studying Seoul Jinohghi gut focusing on the dancing aspects to derive the basic structure of dancing in Jinohghi gut.
Seoul Jinohgigut is a religious ritual that contains sharmanistic characteristics and experiences a certain level of consensus with the gods in a state of ecstasy. So the dances are structured to serves its function, and has simplistic composition, choreography and is repetitive. The dance starts slow but picks up speed as the dance progresses. In the climax part, the Gongsu section the dancer always yells out hyui and rotates her arms in a form, and at the same time show heavy lateral movement.
