영어동화책 소리 내어 읽기활동을 통한 6학년 학생들의 영어 학습 동기 변화 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 최근 영어 교육학계에서 관심을 받고 있는 ‘외국어 학습 동기’ 이론을 지방 초등영어교육 현장에서 실천해 보고 초등학생들의 영어 학습 동기를 발전적으로 변화시키기 위해 시도한 질적 연구이다. 25명의 남부지방 초등학생들이 2017년 봄 학기동안 온라인 영어동화 소리 내어 읽기 학습을 수행하는 동안 설문과 면담, 관찰 등을 통해 질적 연구 데이터를 수집하였다. 7월 말 수집된 데이터를 연구방법론에 따라 분석한 결과 25명의 학생 중에는 영어 학습 동기가 긍정적으로 발전된 정도에 따라 세 부류가 있었다. 전체 세 부류 학생들의 영어 학습 동기 변화를 대표하는 다섯 명을 대상으로 최종면담하고 분석한 최종 연구결과는 학생 별로 학습 동기 변화의 폭이 매우 크다는 것이었다. 이런 연구결과를 바탕으로 초등학생 대상 영어 학습 동기 변화 시도를 위한 실질적이며 실행 가능한 연구 방향을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

The purposes of this study is to understand 25 sixth-graders English learning motivation development while they read children s story books online for a semester at I Elementary School. The students participated in the study while they read-aloud the books they selected, recorded and uploaded their reading at an internet cafe for 21 weeks in 2017. In July when interview data, observation reports and survey results were analyzed three groups of English learning motivation development emerged. In August final focus-group interviews were carried out for 90 to 120 minutes each individually with five participants who represented the three groups. The results are as follows: First, English learning motivation of group A increased through a semester-long online children s story book reading activity. Second, group B s learning motivation was enhanced to a small extent. They demonstrated positive changes in interest and confidence, but their perception towards English did not seem to be improved much for 21 weeks. Third, group C s English learning motivation didn t seem to change and they did not hide their negative feelings towards English/English learning at the final interview. The results indicate that it is essential to guide sixth-graders individually to be able to boost their English learning motivation. Further study topics are suggested based on the study results.
