국문 초록

첼터와 그의 베를린 리트악파 및 북부독일 동료들에 의한, 전 생애에 걸친 노력은 슈베르트와 함께하는 예술가곡의 탄생에 기여한다. 이탈리아 오페라로부터 시민사회의 사교적 생활노래로 방향전환 한 그들은 고귀한 단순성을 추구하면서도 “가사 먼저, 그 다음에 음악”이라는 개혁오페라의 원칙도 수용한다. 이 원칙 하에서 첼터와 괴테의 교류도 이루어지는데, 괴테는 자신의 시와 첼터의 음악을 각각 풍선과 그속의 가스에 비유한다. 이 두 예술가의 반평생에 걸친 창의적 협동작업은 시와 음악 사이에 창작을 위한 상호 동기부여라는 하나의 “순환체계”를 형성하게 한다. 이들의 교류는 문학과 음악의 이상적인 동반자의 길을 열고자 한 하나의 의도된 예술 프로젝트와도 같다. 첼터는 괴테-시의 해석에서 독일 민속음조, 바로크-이탈리아 성악의 멜리스마 및 칸타빌레 특성을 접목시킴으로써 종종 모방자로 오인되었으나, 괴테의 전적인 동의를 얻는다. 그는 자기 고유양식의 정립엔 취약했으나 리트의 가능성들을시험하였다. 첼터의 리트미학은 멘델스존, 뢰베 등의 리트·발라드·로만체로 전수되었을 뿐 아니라, 슈베르트의 리트에도 조그만 흔적들을 남기고 있다.

영문 초록

The effort that Carl Zelter and his fellow colleagues dedicated into transforming German Lied into an Art Lied received both praise and criticism. After the “period without Lied” came to an end, the composers were inspired by free an easy melodies and folksy tunes, and rejected the bombastic Italian operas. Although their Lied-art was based off of an elegant and simple folk song, they adhered to the principle that composers should support poets by accepting the essence of operatic reforms, and believed that music should be subordinated to texts. Zelter also tried to include aspects of Baroque music, and the principles of cantabile in Italian vocal music into the creation of his Lied. Through his close friendship with Goethe, Zelter built a strong position as an ideal interpreter of Goethe’s poem and in return, his Lied music acted as an inspiration for Goethe’s poems, thus forming a mutualistic relationship that motivated each other. Therefore, their 36-year interaction is an art project of trying to pave the way for an ideal partnership between literature and music. Zelter spent his entire lifetime trying to integrate the attributes of Baroque music and the principles of Italian vocal music with German lyrics text. However, critics often viewed his Lieders as excessively straightforward and emotional. As a result, Zelter may have not been able to establish a distinct style, but he enriched the materials of Lieder. Furthermore, his mutual exchanges with Goethe and the application of the Baroque and Italian vocal music makes him a recognizable composer who added cantabile to German Lied. The features of Zelter’s Lied not only got passed on to the ballads and romances genre, but also started to leave traces in Schubert’s Lied.
