코퍼스 분석에 기반한 영어권 문화 교육의 가능성 탐색

국문 초록

현재 2009 영어과 교육과정 및 2015 영어과 개정 교육과정에서는 영어권의 문화를 소개하고 이해하는 것을 중요한 교육목표로 설정하고 있다. 하지만 영어과 교과서에서 소개하는 영어권 문화는 명절이나 축제와 같은 이벤트 위주의 ‘대문화(Big Culture)’에 집중되어 있고 실제 언어 속에 내포된 문화적 요소 즉 ‘소문화(Little Culture)’는 거의 다루지 못하고 있다(김향란, 2015). 이러한 이유로 본 연구에서는 영어권 언어 사용자의 실제 데이터, 다시 말해 코퍼스를 기반으로 하여 실제적인 언어 사용에 나타난 문화적 요소를 분석하고 이를 바탕으로 한 문화 교육의 가능성을 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 미국과 영국의 대표적인 코퍼스인 COCA와 BNC 에 나타난 식문화를 비교·분석하였고 더 나아가 이들 서구권 국가의 식문화와 동양권 국가의 식문화를 비교하기 위해 인도의 Kolhapur Corpus에서 나타난 식문화를 추가 분석하였다. 분석의 도구로는 COCA와 BNC에서 제공하는 인터넷 코퍼스 검색 엔진과 오프라인 검색 엔진인 AntConc를 사용하였다. 분석 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구에서는 기존의 상식과는 차별화된 미국과 영국 그리고 인도의 실제적인 식문화를 소개할 수 있었고 식문화 속에 포함된 사실적 언어적 표현도 제시할 수 있었다. 결과적으로 코퍼스 분석에 기반한 문화 교육 자료는 매우 흥미롭고 문화 교육에 유용하게 활용될 수 있다는 결론을 도출할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

The present study aims to explore a new way of culture education by applying a corpus-analysis approach. This study has focused on food cultures in English-use countries. Theoretically, this study is based on Brooks (1975) little culture which more focuses on the routine daily habits in one culture such as how people greet each other, what they wear, and what they eat. This study has two goals: To compare and examine American and British food cultures; To examine Indian food culture as an oriental food culture in order to compare with the western food culture like American and British food cultures. For this, the three corpora of Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA), British National Corpus (BNC), and Kolhapur Corpus were analyzed by searching for associated food names with the verb eat/have . The results show there is a considerable difference between American and British food cultures as well as oriental and western food cultures. In addition, this study shows that the corpus-based approach is able to provide authentic information for culture education integrated in English language teaching. In the conclusion, the study suggests an additional corpus-based approach to culture education.
