영문 초록

In this study, we investigate the relative effects of research and development (R&D)investment and patent acquisition activities of exporting and non-exporting SMEs as well asmanufacturing and non-manufacturing SMEs in Korea on their job creation by using 25,529observations of 9,119 firms provided by the Korean Bureau of Statistics from 2009 to 2013.Results show that there exists a positive effect of Korean SME R&D activities on jobcreation, but this is only statistically significant for non-exporting firms. In addition, thereexists a positive effect of exportation of manufacturing SMEs on their job creation and thisfinding is significantly positive for exporting manufacturing firms, but significantly negativefor non-exporting, non-manufacturing firms. The results might imply that jobs are createdmore by non-manufacturing SMEs and/or non-exporting SMEs, although exportation stillaffects corporate job creation positively in recent years, after such a long, successful R&Dandexportation-driven economic development and growth policy by the Korean government.Furthermore, rather than R&D itself, the effectiveness of R&D activities supported by patentrights is a more crucial factor on job creation.
