This study sought to provide a basic set of data for developing a functional pattern for automobile repair uniforms to be designed at a future date. This was done by identifying issues with the existing uniforms by evaluating their fitness. Existing uniforms that are commercially available were overall types which were preferred for their convenience in dressing and undressing as well as adding protective gear. The final design that was selected for a comparison with existing designs were evaluated for its fitness and appropriateness for movement. Fitness was assessed by an expert panel while movement appropriateness was assessed through an experiment using subjects wearing the uniform. Fitness evaluation was done by five subjects and five expert panels on a scale of 5 points. They evaluated that the circumference of the thighs, the circumference of the pant sleeves and that of the hip was wide and large, while the length was assessed to be long. The subjects and expert panel agreed on their assessment of circumference of thighs, length of pants and overall fit and the results suggest that the circumference and width should be adjusted for future designs. The evaluation for movement appropriateness showed that improvements are needed in the shoulders, back and the line from the waist to the end of the hip that get pulled when bending over, as well as the sides and armholes that get pulled. Additional fabric should be added to the area from the waist to the end of the hip (the crotch area as it is generally called), or the design of the shoulders and back should be cut in a way so that enough room is secured when making movements. Darts should be added or materials should be improved to ease the pressure on the elbows and knees when bended. The overall pulling that occurs when moving need to be addressed through improved pattern designs as well as new material designs. Fitnesse valuations should be used as basic data when designing work uniforms and a comparison of patterns must precede the actual design
