Min Jin Lee’s Free Food for Millionaires (2007) portrays generational conflict in a Korean American immigrant family as a persistent condition shaped by historical memory, inequality, and language. Examining Joseph and Leah Han and their daughter Casey, the study shows how postwar Korean scarcity and late-1990s American affluence create enduring misunderstandings. Close readings of family life, institutions, and bilingual exchanges reveal that negotiation often fails, burdening the second generation. By highlighting misalignment and partial belonging, the paper reframes Korean American identity as ongoing rather than resolved.

영문 초록

이민진의 『백만장자를 위한 공짜 음식』(2007)은 한국계 미국 이민 가정에서 나타나는 세대 갈등을 역사적 기억, 불평등, 언어에 의해 형성된 지속적인 상태로 묘사한다. 조셉과 리아 한, 그리고 그들의 딸 케이시를 중심으로 살펴보면, 전후 한국의 결핍과 1990년대 후반 미국의 풍요가 두 세대 간 지속적인 오해를 만들어내는 것을 보여준다. 가족 생활, 제도, 이중 언어적 교류에 대한 면밀한 읽기는 그들 사이의 절충이 종종 실패하며, 그 부담이 2세대에게 전가됨을 드러낸다. 이러한 불일치와 부분적 소속감을 강조함으로써, 이 논문은 한국계 미국인의 정체성을 종결된 것이 아니라 계속되는 과정으로 재구성한다.
