국문 초록

본 연구는 Alfred Adler의 개인심리학에서 제시된 ‘열등감의 수용과 우월성 추구’ 개념을 바탕으로 대학생의 사고 발달과 심리적 성장 과정을 탐색하고자 하였다. 연구 대상은 높은 실행력과 성장지향적 특성을 지닌 A대학교 공과대학 남학생으로, 2025년 10월 초와 중순 총 2차례에 걸쳐 진행된 개별 면담(각 60분)의 내용을 질적 사례 분석하였다. 분석의 초점은 내담자의 언어와 사고 속에 드러난 기질적 특성과 내면의 구조적 패턴을 파악하고 불완전함의 수용을 토대로 열등감의 이해가 건강한 우월성 추구로 재정향되는 심리적 전환 과정을 해석하는데 두었다. 연구 결과, 내담자는 자신의 자아실현 동기와 성장 욕구를 섬세하게 인지하고 이를 실행의 원동력으로 삼는 성장 마인드셋을 지니고 있었다. 그는 면담 과정에서 “완성된 결과를 보여줘야 한다”는 부담에서 벗어나 “과정 중의 공유가 성장으로 이어진다”는 점을 더욱 자각하게 되었고 이에 따라 피드백 수용과 협력적 상호작용을 강화하고자 하였다. 결과적으로, 열등감의 현실적 이해와 수용이 건강한 우월성 추구로 재정향되는 과정을 통해 사고 변화와 사회적 성숙의 선순환 구조가 형성될 수 있음을 알 수 있다. 본 연구는 대학생이 불완전함을 수용하고 메타인지적 성찰을 바탕으로 지속적인 성장의 순환 구조를 구축할 수 있음을 시사한다.

영문 초록

This study explores a university student’s thinking development and psychological growth through Alfred Adler’s concepts of the acceptance of inferiority and striving for superiority. The participant was a male engineering student with strong execution skills and a growth-oriented disposition. Two individual interviews (60 minutes each) were conducted in early and mid-October 2025, and the data were analyzed using a qualitative case study approach. The analysis focused on interpreting the psychological transition through which the student’s acceptance of imperfection led to the reorientation of inferiority toward healthy striving for superiority. The results indicate that the student recognized his motives for self-actualization and utilized them as drivers for action. Throughout the interviews, he increasingly shifted from a performance-centered belief (“I must present perfect results”) to a process-centered perspective (“Sharing during the process leads to growth”), which strengthened his openness to feedback and collaboration. Overall, the findings indicate that a virtuous cycle of thinking development and social maturity can be formed through the process in which a realistic understanding and acceptance of inferiority are reoriented toward healthy striving for superiority. This study suggests that university students can build a sustainable cycle of growth by accepting imperfection and engaging in metacognitive reflection.
