경계선 지능 청년의 대학 적응 경험과 지원 요구에 관한 질적 연구 : 경기도 A대학 사례를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 고등교육에서 포용성이 핵심 과제로 부상한 시대적 배경 속에서, 대학에 진학한 경계선 지능 청년이 경험하는 학업·사회·정서적 어려움의 복합적 실체를 심층 탐색하고, 성공적 대학생활을 위한 통합적 지원 방안을 모색하는 데 목적을 둔다. 경기도 소재 A대학교에 재학 중인 경계선 지능 청년 4명을 대상으로 심층면담을 실시하였고, 자료는 강점 관점에 기초하여 보편적 학습설계(UDL)의 적용 가능성을 검토하는 주제분석으로 처리하였다. 연구 결과, 참여자들은 ‘평균적 학습자’를 전제로 한 대학 교육환경에서 강의 이해의 인지적 과부하, 복잡한 과제 요구의 해석 곤란 등 구조적 장벽에 직면하였다. 아울러 사회적 맥락 파악의 어려움과 낮은 자아존중감이 결합하여 또래로부터의 고립과 만성적 정서 불안을 경험하였다. 동시에 이들은 강의 녹음·반복 청취, 주도적 탐색 노력 등 대처 전략과 강점을 발휘하였다. 이를 기반으로, 본 연구는 개인 결핍 중심 해석을 넘어 환경 속의 인간(person-in-environment) 관점에서 보편적 학습설계 기반 교수·평가의 유연화, 구조화된 또래 멘토링을 통한 관계적 포용성 강화, 다학제 사례관리팀 운영에 의한 선제적 지원 네트워크 구축을 제안한다. 궁극적으로 대학은 모든 학생의 잠재력 실현을 지원하는 포용적 복지 공간으로 기능해야 함을 제언한다.

영문 초록

Amidst an era in which inclusivity in higher education has become a salient imperative, this study investigates in depth the multifaceted academic, social, and emotional difficulties experienced by university entrants with borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) and identifies integrated support measures to promote their successful college adaptation. In-depth interviews were conducted with four BIF students enrolled at a university in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis informed by a strengths perspective, with attention to the applicability of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Findings indicate that, within educational environments predicated on the “average learner,” participants encountered structural barriers—notably cognitive overload in lecture comprehension and difficulties in interpreting complex assignment requirements. Moreover, challenges in reading social context, compounded by low self-esteem, contributed to peer isolation and chronic emotional anxiety. At the same time, participants demonstrated coping strategies and personal strengths, including recording lectures for repeated listening and proactive exploratory efforts. Moving beyond deficit-oriented interpretations, the study advances Person-in-Environment (PIE)–informed improvements to the university context: UDL-based flexibility in teaching and assessment, enhancement of relational inclusion through structured peer mentoring, and the establishment of a proactive support network via a multidisciplinary case-management team. Ultimately, the study recommends positioning universities as inclusive welfare spaces that support all students in realizing their potential.
