국문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine how beginner-level Chinese-speaking Korean learners perceive the pragmatic appropriateness of utterances and how they revise utterances judged inappropriate, in comparison with native Korean speakers. Using a modified written Discourse Completion Task (19 items across six speech-act domains, with the social variables of Power, Distance, and Ranking systematically varied), responses from 21 learners and 21 native speakers were analyzed through frequency-based and qualitative case analysis. Learners accepted a wider range of utterances as appropriate, especially in high-power (+P), high social distance (+D), and high-imposition (+R) situations, revealing a form-centered judgment tendency. In revising inappropriate utterances, both groups drew on politeness adjustment to a similar extent but differed in how often they combined it with content reformation: politeness adjustment alone was the most frequent choice among learners, whereas native speakers most often paired it with reason-giving. Both groups used the combined strategy more as face-threat increased, though learners adjusted less; form adjustment was rare in both groups. These research findings suggest that instruction at the beginner level should systematically integrate linguistic forms with pragmatic functions.
