국문 초록

This study explores how Vietnamese learners of Korean form identities through language investment in a second-language environment. Based on the model of investment proposed by Darvin & Norton(2015), Bourdieu’s theory of linguistic capital(1977), and the discourse of pride and profit discussed by Heller & Duchêne(2012), this study qualitatively analyzes focus-group interview data from five Vietnamese learners who have lived in Korea for more than five years. The findings show that investment in Korean began with the consumption of Korean popular culture but expanded into the formation of imagined communities and imagined identities through long-term residence in Korea. The participants accumulated linguistic capital through self-directed immersion, everyday interaction, and self-monitoring, while reconstructing their identities as bilingual speakers. However, visa regulations, employment barriers, and nationality-based hiring practices functioned as forms of systemic control that limited the realization of their linguistic capital. These findings suggest that Korean language education should move beyond language skills and support learners’ career development, social participation, and possibilities for long-term settlement.
