국문 초록

Nitric oxide (NO) is a multi-functional diatomic free radical gas that plays a vital role in regulating systemic homeostasis and diverse physiological cascades. Owing to its multifaceted roles, the therapeutic applications of NO have rapidly expanded into ischemic heart diseases, infectious diseases, thrombosis, cancer, and inflammatory disorders. However, the therapeutic efficacy of NO is highly dependent on its concentration, release kinetics, and the pathophysiology of diseases, thereby necessitating disease-specific delivery strategies. Accordingly, diverse NO delivery systems have been developed to address these distinct pathological needs. In this review, we summarize the therapeutic mechanisms of NO and provide an overview of NO delivery strategies for various diseases, along with recent research trends in advanced NO delivery systems.
