현대인의 얼굴 이미지를 통한 욕망의 조형적 표현 연구: 신상우 ｢Modern People｣ 연작을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 신상우의 ｢Modern People｣ 연작에 나타난 얼굴 이미지를 중심으로 현대인의 욕망이 어떠한 조형적 방식으로 시각화되는지를 분석하고, 그 조형적 특성과 신표현주의적 표현 양식을 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. 현대미술은 사실적 재현을 넘어 인간의 내면 심리와 무의식, 사회적 욕망을 다양한 조형 언어를 통해 표현해 왔으며, 얼굴 이미지는 감정과 정체성, 욕망을 상징적으로 드러내는 핵심적인 시각 요소로 기능한다. 연구방법은 바타이유(G. Bataille)의 욕망 이론, 마르쿠제(H. Marcuse)의 예술 해방론, 프로이트(S. Freud)와 융(C. G. Jung)의 정신분석 이론을 이론적 틀로 설정하고, 장 뒤뷔페(Jean Dubuffet), 장 미셸 바스키아(Jean-Michel Basquiat), 프랜시스 베이컨(Francis Bacon)의 작품과 비교⋅분석하였다. 이를 바탕으로 ｢Modern People｣ 연작에 나타난 얼굴 이미지의 형태, 선, 색채, 물질성 및 표현방식을 중심으로 조형적 특성을 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 과장되고 왜곡된 얼굴 이미지는 현대인의 억압된 욕망과 심리적 불안, 정체성의 혼란을 상징적으로 드러내는 조형 장치로 기능하였다. 둘째, 거친 선묘와 단순화된 형태, 강렬한 색채 대비는 인간의 원초적 감정과 생명력을 강조하며 신표현주의적 표현특성과 긴밀한 관련성을 보였다. 셋째, 판화와 회화가 결합된 물질적 표현은 화면의 다층적 질감을 형성하고 현대인의 복합적인 감정 구조와 내면 의식을 효과적으로 시각화하는 역할을 수행하였다. 본 연구는 신상우 ｢Modern People｣ 연작의 얼굴 이미지가 현대인의 욕망과 심리적 상태를 표현하는 조형 언어로 기능하고 있음을 확인하였으며, 현대 인물화에서 얼굴 이미지의 표현 가능성과 신표현주의적 조형 언어의 확장 가능성을 제시하였다는 점에서 의의를 가진다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze how the desires of modern people are visualized in a formative manner, focusing on the facial images appearing in Shin Sangwoo’s “Modern People” series, and to examine their formative characteristics and neo‑expressionist expression styles. Contemporary art has gone beyond realistic representation to express human inner psychology, unconsciousness, and social desires through various forms of artistic language, and the image of the face functions as a key visual element that symbolically reveals emotions, identity, and desire. The research method uses G. Bataille’s Theory of Desire, H. Marcuse’s Theory of Artistic Liberation, and the psychoanalytic theories of S. Freud and C. G. Jung as the theoretical framework, and compares and analyzes the works of Jean Dubuffet, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Francis Bacon. Based on this, we analyzed the formative characteristics of the face images in the “Modern People” series, focusing on their shape, lines, color, materiality, and methods of expression. According to the research results, first, the exaggerated and distorted facial images function as a formative device that symbolically reveals the repressed desires, psychological anxiety, and confusion of identity in modern people. Second, the rough line drawing, simplified forms, and intense color contrast emphasize human primal emotions and vitality, and show a close relationship with the characteristics of neo-expressionist expression. Third, the material expression that combines printmaking and painting creates a multi-layered texture on the canvas and effectively visualizes the complex emotional structures and inner consciousness of modern people. This study confirms that the facial images in Shin Sang-woo’s “Modern People” series function as a formative language that expresses the desires and psychological st.
