좀비 아포칼립스 속 헤테로토피아: 한국 좀비 웹툰에 나타난 도피와 유예의 공간 : <닭은 의외로 위대하다>와 <위아더좀비>를 중심으로

국문 초록

기존 한국 웹툰 내 좀비 소재는 주로 아포칼립스 상황에서의 생존 문제와 이로 인한 전통적인 가족 해체 문제 등을 중심으로 활용되었다. 본 연구는 한국 웹툰 <닭은 의외로 위대하다>와 <위아더좀비>를 분석대상으로 삼아, 좀비 아포칼립스가 단순한 공포·생존 장르 배경을 넘어 현대 사회의 억압으로부터 일시적으로 이탈할 수 있는 ‘도피의 공간’을 제공한다는 점을 논증한다. 이를 위해 지그문트 바우만의 액체 현대론과 미셸 푸코의 헤테로토피아·헤테로크로니아 개념을 분석틀로 결합하여 두 작품을 분석한다. 본 연구의 중점은 바우만이 진단한 액체 현대 결핍, 즉 관계의 유동성, 실패의 책임을 개인 혼자 짊어지는 압박, 끊임없는 자기 증명 강박, 안정적 소속의 상실 등이 좀비 아포칼립스 상황이 부여한 생존 문제 앞에서 단절되며 이것이 곧 헤테로토피아로 전환된다는 점이다. <닭은 의외로 위대하다>에서는 좀비 사태로 인해 주거 이동 및 법적, 행정적 처리가 불가능해진다. 이 강제적 단절은 소외된 노년 주체와 복합적 트라우마를 지닌 인물에게 사회적 판단과 낙인을 유예하는 ‘강제된 헤테로토피아’로 작동한다. 또한 <위아더좀비>에서는 좀비 사태 발발 후, 서울타워만 좀비로 가득 찬다. 하지만 탈출 가능한 상황에서도 서울타워에 머무르기를 선택하는 인물들을 통해, 액체 현대의 속도 강박과 성취 압박으로부터 자발적으로 이탈하는 ‘선택된 헤테로토피아’가 형상화된다. 이를 통해 본 연구는 두 웹툰이 좀비 장르라는 외형 아래 시대적 피로와 유예를 ‘사회적 유예 장치’로 재구조함을 확인하는 데 의의를 두며, 다만 이 도피가 위협 소거된 해방이 아닌 압박의 형태 전환에 가깝다는 점을 확인할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The zombie motif in Korean webtoons has largely been employed to explore survival under apocalyptic conditions and the resulting collapse of the traditional family structure. This study takes the Korean webtoons A Chicken Unexpectedly Great and We Are the Zombies as its objects of analysis and argues that the zombie apocalypse functions not merely as a backdrop for horror and survival narratives but as a “space of escape” that allows temporary withdrawal from the pressures of contemporary society. To this end, the study combines Zygmunt Bauman's theory of liquid modernity with Michel Foucault's concepts of heterotopia and heterochrony as an analytical framework for examining both works. The central concern of this study is that the deficiencies of liquid modernity diagnosed by Bauman—namely, the fluidity of relationships, the pressure of bearing sole individual responsibility for failure, the compulsion for constant self-proof, and the loss of stable belonging—are suspended in the face of the survival crisis imposed by the zombie apocalypse, and that this suspension is itself transformed into a heterotopia. In A Chicken Unexpectedly Great, the zombie outbreak renders residential relocation as well as legal and administrative procedures impossible. This forced rupture functions as a “forced heterotopia” that suspends social judgment and stigma for a marginalized elderly subject and a character bearing complex trauma. In We Are the Zombies, meanwhile, only Seoul Tower becomes overrun with zombies after the outbreak. Yet through characters who choose to remain in Seoul Tower even when escape is possible, the work embodies a “chosen heterotopia,” a voluntary departure from the compulsion for speed and achievement that characterizes liquid modernity. Through this comparison, the study aims to demonstrate that both webtoons, beneath the surface of the zombie genre, restructure contemporary fatigue and deferral as a “device of social suspension,” while also showing that this escape is not a liberation that eliminates threat altogether, but rather a transformation in the form of pressure the characters confront.
