국문 초록

2022 개정 교육과정은 초등 사회 역사 영역의 대전환이자 시험대라고 평가될 만큼 큰 폭으로 변화했다. 이에 따라 검정 교과서에서도 여러 변화가 나타날 것으로 예상되었다. 특히 다양한 교과서가 출간될 것으로 기대되었다. 본 논문은 새롭게 검정에 통과한 초등 사회 5-2 교과서 8종을 검토함으로써 교과서의 다양성을 확인하고자 하였다. 각 교과서의 내용 조직 방식과 내용 요소를 구체적으로 따져보고, 동일 집필진이 집필한 2015 검정 교과서와의 비교도 진행했다. 8종의 교과서는 같은 내용과 서사를 공유하는 등 대동소이한 면모도 보였고, 새로운 시도와 관점을 제시하면서 다양한 측면도 보였다. 다양한 검정 교과서의 측면에서 두 가지 사실이 확인되었다. 먼저 교육과정･성취기준과 교과서 집필의 밀접한 관계를 다시금 확인할 수 있었다. 2015 개정 교육과정에서 매우 구체적으로 명시되었던 내용 요소는 2022 개정 교육 과정에서 모두 사라졌다. 그에 따라 교과서 집필진이 자유롭게 서술할 공간이 마련되기도 했다. 삼국의 전성기를 생략한 고대사 서술과 다양하게 구성된 조선 후기 사회 변동의 원인 등은 그러한 면모를 보여준다. 반면, 교육과정에 명시된 국가･분야 등을 그대로 채택하여 반영하려는 모습도 확인된다. 가야나 고려의 여러 분야가 그러하다. 조선 전기의 여러 분야를 유교로 설명하는 서사도 성취기준의 영향이다. 한편, 교육과정의 변화는 시대･단원마다 달리 반영되었다. 고대와 고려는 정치사가 축소되고, 신분, 생활, 대외교류 등 새로운 분야와 내용으로 채워졌다. 조선 전기는 내용 요소가 대폭 바뀌지 않았다. 조선 후기에서는 집필진들이 사회･문화의 변화 요소를 제시해야 했는데, 농･상업의 발달과 신분제 변동이 선택되었으며, 교과서마다 그 내용과 밀도를 달리했다. 그러면서도 조선 후기 ‘서민 문화’는 모든 교과서가 같은 방식으로 다루었다. 이를 통해 다양한 교과서 서술을 위해서는 시대별로 다른 접근이 요구되는 것을 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

The 2022 Revised Curriculum has brought about significant changes, evaluated as a major turning point and a testing ground for the history domain in elementary social studies. Consequently, various changes, particularly the publication of more diverse textbooks, were highly anticipated. This study aimed to examine the diversity of textbooks by analyzing eight newly authorized elementary social studies textbooks for the second semester of the fifth grade. The study closely reviewed the content organization methods and content elements of each textbook, alongside a comparative analysis with the 2015 authorized textbooks written by the same authors. The eight textbooks demonstrated both shared commonalities in their content and narratives, as well as diversity by presenting new approaches and perspectives. Through the examination of these diverse authorized textbooks, two main findings emerged. First, the close relationship between the curriculum/ achievement standards and textbook narratives was reaffirmed. The highly specific content elements mandated in the 2015 Revised Curriculum were removed in the 2022 revision, thereby granting authors greater autonomy in their writing. This newfound freedom is evident in the omission of the peak periods of the Three Kingdoms in ancient history and the diverse explanations for social changes in the late Joseon period. Conversely, a tendency to strictly adhere to the nations and fields explicitly stated in the curriculum was also observed, particularly concerning Gaya and various aspects of the Goryeo period. Furthermore, the narrative framing various aspects of the early Joseon period as being influenced by Confucianism is also a direct result of the achievement standards. Second, the changes in the curriculum were reflected differently across historical periods and units. In the sections on ancient history and the Goryeo period, political history was reduced and replaced with new themes such as social status, daily life, and foreign exchanges. In contrast, the early Joseon period saw no drastic changes in content elements. For the late Joseon period, authors were required to present factors driving social and cultural changes; while agricultural and commercial developments alongside shifts in the status system were commonly selected, the depth and content varied by textbook. Nevertheless, the “commoner culture” of the late Joseon period was treated uniformly across all textbooks. Ultimately, these findings suggest that period-specific approaches are necessary to foster truly diverse textbook narratives.
