도전적 시도, 아쉬운 안착 - 2022 개정 초등 역사교과서 (5~6학년군) 서술 분석

국문 초록

이 글은 2026년 3월부터 초등 현장에 보급된 2022 개정 교육과정 기반 5~6학년 사회과 교과서의 역사 영역을 중심으로, 편제와 서술 체계의 구체적 변화상을 분석하고 향후의 과제를 고찰하였다. 분석 결과, 새로 개발된 검정 교과서들은 성취기준의 변화에 발맞춰 기존의 영웅 및 엘리트 중심 서사에서 벗어나 여성, 어린이, 피지배층 등 보통 사람들의 삶을 복원함으로써 서술 주체의 다변화와 형평성을 진전시켰다. 또한 학습자 수준에 맞춘 다양한 1차 사료를 전면 배치하여 암기 중심 교육을 피하고 주체적으로 역사를 탐구하는 ‘역사하기’의 가능성을 확장하였다. 그러나 이러한 ‘생활의 재발견’이라는 성과에도 불구하고, 전근대사 및 개항기 단원에서는 여전히 풍물기적 나열이나 기존의 내재적 발전론 서사를 답습하는 관성을 드러냈다. 특히 6학년 현대사 단원에서는 민주화운동 과정의 미시적 연대 서사가 대폭 축소된 반면, 해방 후 경제사가 1, 2학기에 걸쳐 중복 심화되면서 과거 완료된 현대사를 국가중심적 성장주의의 도구이자 배경으로 치환하는 서사의 보수성과 퇴행을 보였다. 향후 초등 역사교육의 강화를 위해서는 일방향적 성장주의를 넘어선 생태환경적 서사의 도입, 초등교사의 역사 역량 강화를 위한 구체적 가이드라인 마련, 그리고 ‘정답’이 닌 ‘천천히 사유하는’ 안전한 고민의 장을 교실에 구축하려는 실천적 노력이 필요하다.

영문 초록

This study examines the history domains of the 5th and 6th-grade social studies textbooks developed under the 2022 Revised Curriculum, which were distributed to elementary schools in March 2026. It analyzes the specific changes in their organization and narrative systems while exploring the future prospects of history education. The analysis reveals that the newly developed authorized textbooks have aligned with the revised achievement standards to move away from traditional hero- and elite-centered narratives. Instead, they reconstruct the lives of ordinary people—including women, children, and the ruled classes—thereby advancing the diversification and equity of historical subjects. Furthermore, by universally integrating diverse primary sources tailored to the learners' levels, the textbooks expand the potential for “doing history,” where students independently investigate history rather than relying on rote memorization. However, despite these achievements in “rediscovering daily life,” a persistent inertia remains; pre-modern and port-opening periodunits continue to rely on the superficial listing of customs or follow the conventional thesis of internal development. Notably, in the 6th-grade modern history units, the micro-level narratives of solidarity during democratic movements have been drastically reduced. Conversely, post-liberation economic history is heavily emphasized across both the first and second semesters, demonstrating a conservative regression that reduces modern history to a mere backdrop or “growing pain” for state-centered growth-oriented development. To strengthen elementary history education moving forward, continuous practical efforts are required to introduce eco-environmental narratives that transcend unidirectional growth-centered paradigms, establish concrete guidelines to enhance elementary teachers' historical competencies, and foster safe spaces in classrooms where students can contemplate deeply rather than merely searching for fixed “correct answers”.
