『금오신화』와 『기재기이』의 초월계 방문자 양상과 문학적 의미

국문 초록

『금오신화』와 『기재기이』는 설화 시대의 초월계 방문자 형상이 집중적으로 포진된 작품이다. 초월계 방문자는 ‘몸’의 변주가 아닌 ‘육신 그 자체의 경계 넘기’ 실험에 도전한다. 초월계 방문자 양상은 동체(動體)형, 감정(感情)형, 가사(假死)형 등으로 나타난다. 방문자가 동체형 서사에 중심을 두느냐, 감정형 서사에 비중을 두느냐, 이 둘의 상황을 유지하며 가사(假死)형 속에서 초월계를 주유하느냐에 따라 작품 공간의 성격이 달라진다. 동체형 방문자는 ‘몸’의 동선을 능동적으로 활용하며 공간의 확장성에 기여한다. 〈취유부벽정기〉와 〈최생우진기〉, 〈하생기우전〉의 초월계 방문자들이 그들이다. 반면에 〈서재야회록〉과 〈안빙몽유록〉은 서사체 사이의 감정 연대에 비중을 두고 있어 공간의 밀집성이 두드러진다. 자연 호흡 상태로는 도달하기 어려운 사지(死地)로 방문한 자들도 있다. 〈남염부주지〉와 〈용궁부연록〉, 〈이생규장전〉, 〈만복사저포기〉등은 가사(假死) 상태의 ‘몸’으로 초월계에서 복합적인 공간을 구축한다. 초월계 방문자 논의는 ‘작자의 인격 은닉 조형’과 ‘선화(善化)론의 서사적 변주’라는 측면에서 문학적 의미를 살필 수 있다.

영문 초록

『GeumoSinhwa』 and 『GijaeGiui』 are works that intensively feature the figures of visitors to the transcendent world from the era of tales. These visitors challenge the ontology of immortality not through variations of the ‘body,’ but through the experiment of ‘'crossing boundaries with the physical body itself.’ The aspects of visitors to the transcendent world in classical novels manifest as kinetic -centered, emotion-weighted, and suspended animation types. The density of the literary space is realized differently depending on whether the narrative focuses on kinetic movement, emphasizes emotional narrative, or explores the transcendent world within a state of suspended animation while maintaining both conditions. Kinetic-centered visitors actively utilize the movement of the ‘body,’ contributing to the expansiveness of the narrative space. Emotion -centered visitors emphasize the emotional solidarity between characters, leading to a prominent density of space. Visitors in a state of suspended animation travel to deadly realms that are difficult to reach through natural breathing, visiting the transcendent world in a sort of comatose state. The study of visitors to the transcendent world in classical novels holds literary significance in terms of the ‘author’s hidden personality modeling’ and the ‘narrative variation of the Seonhwa-ron (theory of transformation into an immortal).’ Studying the visitors to the transcendent world in both works is a way to shed new light on the character theory and creative consciousness of classical novels.
