본 연구는 기업의 신용등급이 환경 특허출원에 어떻게 반응하는지를 분석하였다. 2012년부터 2022년 기간 동안 한국거래소에 상장된 기업을 대상으로 분석한 결과, 환경 특허출원과 신용등급 간에 유의한 양(+)의 관계가 관찰되었다. 또한, 이러한 양(+)의 관계는 재무 분석가의 수가 적거나 재량적 발생액이 높은 기업에서 강화되었는데, 이는 정보 비대칭 정도가 큰 상황에서 환경 특허출원이 중요한 평가 요소로 작용할 가능성을 시사한다. 한편, 현금흐름 및 성과 변동성을 통제한 이후에도 환경 특허출원과 신용등급 간 양(+)의 관계가 유지되었는데, 이는 관찰된 양(+)의 관계가 환경 특허출원에 따른 재무적 펀더멘털(fundamentals)의 개선에 의한 결과로 설명되기 어려움을 뜻한다. 또한, 기업의 환경 성과를 통제한 이후에도 환경 특허출원의 효과는 크게 변하지 않았다. 이는 신용등급이 기업의 관측 가능한 환경 성과에만 반응하는 것이 아니라, 환경 특허출원이라는 추가적 정보를 고려하고 있을 가능성을 시사한다. 나아가, 탄소 집약도 및 에너지 집약도가 큰 기업일수록 환경 특허출원과 신용등급 간 양(+)의 관계가 증폭되는데, 이는 환경 특허출원이 기후 위험 노출의 정도에 따라 신용평가에 차별적으로 반영될 수 있음을 의미한다. 끝으로, 환경 특허출원의 인용 정도로 측정한 환경 특허 품질(quality)은 신용등급에 유의한 영향을 미치지 않았는데, 이는 신용등급이 환경 특허의 품질보다는 특허출원 자체에 반응함을 의미한다. 종합하면, 본 연구는 환경 특허출원이 가시적인 신호로 작용할 수 있음을 보여준다.

영문 초록

This study examines whether and how corporate green patenting is incorporated into firms’ credit evaluations. Using a sample of publicly listed firms in South Korea, we document a positive association between green patenting activity and subsequent credit ratings. This relationship is stronger for firms facing greater information asymmetry, consistent with the view that observable green patenting carries informational value in credit assessments under limited transparency. The documented association remains largely unchanged after controlling for firms’ financial fundamentals and realized environmental performance, indicating that the rating effect of green patenting is not solely driven by improvements in underlying financial conditions or observable environmental outcomes. Moreover, the relationship between green patenting and credit ratings is amplified among firms with greater exposure to climate-related transition risks, suggesting that green patenting becomes more informative when environmental factors are economically salient. In contrast, we find no evidence that credit ratings respond to citation-based differences in green patent quality. Taken together, the findings indicate that green patenting is incorporated into credit evaluations primarily as an observable signal.
