국문 초록

본 연구는 CEO의 내부부채가 경영자의 단기 성과 지향적 의사결정에 미치는 영향을 분석한다. 2006~2018 년 미국 상장기업 12,850개 기업-연도 표본을 이용하여, CEO 내부부채 인센티브를 CEO 내부부채/지분 비율과 기업 부채/자기자본 비율의 상대값으로 측정하고, 단기주의의 대용치로 연구개발비 삭감 여부를 사용하였다. 로지스틱 회귀분석 결과, 내부부채 인센티브가 높을수록 연구개발비의 지출을 삭감할 가능성이 유의하게 증가하였다. 또한 CEO 임기가 짧은 집단에서 내부부채와 단기주의 간의 양의 관계가 더 강하게 나타나 조절효과를 확인하였다. 대안 지표인 실제 이익조정을 사용한 분석에서도 동일한 결론이 관찰되어 결과의 강건성이 지지되었다. 본 연구는 내부부채가 채권자적 관점을 강화하는 동시에 혁신 투자를 위축시켜 기업의 장기가치에 부정적 영향을 줄 수 있음을 제시한다.

영문 초록

This study investigates whether CEO inside debt promotes managerial short-termism. Using 12,850 U.S. firm-year observations from 2006-2018, we measure inside-debt incentives with Relative Leverage, defined as the CEO's inside-debt-to-equity ratio scaled by the firm's debt-to-equity ratio. Short-termism is proxied by an indicator for R&D cuts. The results show that higher inside-debt incentives significantly increase the likelihood of cutting R&D, consistent with inside debt heightening downside-risk sensitivity and discouraging risky long-term investment. We also examine CEO tenure as a moderator and find the positive association is stronger for short-tenure CEOs. Using real earnings management as an alternative proxy yields consistent results. Overall, our findings suggest that while inside debt may align managers with debtholders, it can also exacerbate myopic decision-making and weaken firms' long-term growth potential.
