『청성잡기』 「성언」의 평점 비평에 나타난 이덕무의 자기 인식과 화이관

국문 초록

본고는 성대중의 『청성잡기』 「성언」에 실린 평점 비평을 중심으로 이덕무의 자기 인식과 화이관을 고찰한 연구이다. 이덕무는 자신과 같은 서얼 지식인이었던 성대중의 글 속에서 묘처를 예리하게 포착하고, 眞情을 바탕으로 깊이 교감하며 평어 속에 자신의 내면을 여실하게 드러냈다. 이덕무의 비평은 서얼과 기층민의 일화를 다룬 부분과 중화와 이적의 관계를 논한 부분에 두드러지게 부기되어 있어 주목을 요한다. 먼저 서얼과 기층민의 이야기에서 이덕무는 미천한 인재들이 지닌 뛰어난 역량을 인정하고 자부하는 한편, 신분의 벽 앞에서 스스로를 끊임없이 검열해야 했던 냉혹한 현실을 직시하였다. 이는 능력에 대한 자부심과 현실에 대한 경계심 사이를 오가는 서얼 지식인으로서의 투철한 자기 인식이 투영된 결과이다. 다음으로, 화이 관계를 논한 글에서 이덕무는 지리와 종족에 따른 차별을 거부하고 ‘하늘 아래 화이의 구분이 없다’고 역설한 성대중의 견해에 전폭적인 지지를 드러냈다. 이덕무가 자신의 관점을 직접적으로 서술하지 않아 그의 화이관을 구체적으로 살피기는 어려우나, 적극적인 공감을 표한 비평을 통해 그가 만년에 지향하였던 화이관의 일면을 엿볼 수 있다. 이덕무가 기층민의 삶과 평등을 논한 화이관에 집중적으로 비평을 남긴 사실은 그의 평어가 스스로 절실하게 의식하고 있던 사회적, 사상적 문제 위에서 밀도 있게 작동하였음을 시사한다. 또한 이러한 양상을 통해 그의 비평이 작품에 대한 분석이나 품평의 차원에 머무르지 않고, 자신의 견해를 표명하며 작가인 성대중과 사회적 처지 및 세계 인식에 대한 사유를 공유하는 매개체로 기능하였음을 확인할 수 있다. 요컨대 『청성잡기』 속 이덕무의 평점 비평은 성대중과의 지적 교감을 통해 자신의 사유와 내면을 확립해 가는 과정을 담아낸 것이라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study examines Lee Deok-mu’s self-awareness and his view of the Hua-Yi (Sino-barbarian) relationship through his commentarial criticism on the “Seongeon” section of Seong Dae-jung’s Cheongseongjapgi. Lee keenly captured the profound nuances that Seong, a fellow seoeol (concubine-born) intellectual, embedded in the text, and revealing his own inner self through a deep resonance based on genuine emotion. Lee’s commentary is notably concentrated on sections dealing with seoeol and the common people, as well as those discussing the relationship between the Middle Kingdom (Hua) and the barbarians (Yi). Regarding the former, Lee acknowledged and took pride in the exceptional capabilities of marginalized talents, while simultaneously confronting the cold reality of social barriers that forced constant self-censorship. This reflects the acute self-awareness of a seoeol intellectual oscillating between pride in one’s abilities and wariness of reality. Regarding the latter, Lee expressed full support for Seong’s view, which rejected discrimination based on geography or ethnicity and insisted that “under heaven, there is no distinction between Hua and Yi.” Although it is difficult to examine Lee’s Hua-Yi view in detail since he did not describe his own perspective directly, his empathetic commentary provides a glimpse into the worldview he sought to achieve in his later years. The fact that Lee focused his commentary on the lives of the common people and an egalitarian Hua-Yi view suggests that his criticism functioned intensely within the social and ideological problems he was acutely conscious of. Furthermore, this pattern confirms that his criticism was not limited to mere analysis or appraisal, but served as a medium for expressing his own views and sharing thoughts with the author regarding their shared social status and worldview. Ultimately, Lee’s commentarial criticism in Cheongseongjapgi captures the process through which he established his own thoughts and inner self through intellectual communion with Seong Dae-jung.
