국문 초록

In “The Birthmark,” Hawthorne portrays Aylmer as a scientist who prioritizes scientific achievement above all, viewing Georgiana’s mark as a fatal sign of human imperfection. Driven by intellectual arrogance, he seeks to perfect nature and commits an act of hubris by encroaching upon the divine. Yet Hawthorne suggests perfection is unattainable, and Aylmer’s attempt ultimately leads to Georgiana’s death. Critiquing this misguided pursuit of perfection, Hawthorne highlights the danger of sacrificing present happiness for abstract perfection, and his insight into blind faith in sciences, perfectionism, and the sacrifice of women calls for ethical reflection in AI age.
