Collaborative Group Work in EFL Listening Instruction: Exploring Changes in Listening Ability, Anxiety, and Learner Attitudes

This study investigated listening comprehension, listening anxiety, and attitudes toward collaborative learning in 22 Korean university students following structured group listening tasks over 15 weeks. Repeated-measures ANOVA indicated significant improvement in listening scores (p = .001, η²ₚ = .23), with the greatest gains in the early semester. Paired-samples t-tests revealed reduced listening anxiety (p = .004, d = 0.70) and more positive attitudes toward group work (p = .019, d = 0.54). Thematic analysis of peer assessment comments yielded four themes: division of labor, task contribution, affective and interpersonal elements, and helpful study strategies. Findings align with sociocultural and interactionist perspectives, though causal claims are limited by the absence of a control group. Pedagogical implications for EFL listening instruction are discussed.
