‘怎麼’와 ‘為什麼’의 화용·인지적 차이와 교학적 응용

국문 초록

본 연구는 현대중국어에서 ‘원인 의문’을 나타내는 의문대사 ‘怎麼’와 ‘為什麼’의 화용·인지적 차이를 통합적으로 분석하였다. 화용적 차이는 정보 구조, 감정 개입, 담화맥락의 세 요소에서 나타난다. ‘怎麼’는 예측 위반 상황에서 화자의 정서가 개입된반응형 의문문으로, 주로 비공식적인 담화 맥락에서 사용되는 반면, ‘為什麼’는 정보결핍 상황에서 원인을 탐색하는 탐색형 의문문으로, 비교적 중립적이거나 공식적인담화 맥락에서 실현된다. 인지적 차이로는, ‘怎麼’가 화자가 장면 내부에서 정서를 포함해 사건을 인식하는 주관적 인식 구조를 반영하는 데 비해, ‘為什麼’는 장면 외부에서 인과 관계를 논리적으로 탐색하는 객관적 인식 구조를 반영한다. 이러한 화용적·인지적 인식 구조의 차이는 두 표현의 호환성에도 영향을 미쳐, 감정 개입이 약하고 담화가 중립적으로 유지되는 경우에는 제한적으로 교체가 가능하나, 정서적 반응이 두드러지거나 담화의 공식성이 높아질수록 교체는 제약된다. 결론적으로 두 표현의 대비는 단순한 표현상의 차이가 아니라, 화자의 인식 위치, 정서 개입, 담화 맥락이 결합된 화용적·인지적 통합 체계를 반영한다.

영문 초록

This study presents an integrated analysis of the pragmatic and cognitive differences between the Mandarin Chinese interrogative expressions zěnme(怎麼) and wèishénme(為什麼), both of which are used to express causal questions. Pragmatic differences are observed along three dimensions: information structure, emotional involvement, and discourse context. Zěnme functions as a responseoriented interrogative that involves the speaker’s emotional reaction in situations of expectation violation and is primarily used in informal discourse contexts. In contrast, wèishénme functions as an inquiry-oriented interrogative employed to explore causes in situations of information deficit and is typically realized in relatively neutral or formal discourse contexts. From a cognitive perspective, zěnme reflects a subjective construal in which the speaker is positioned within the scene and perceives the event with emotional involvement, whereas wèishénme reflects an objective construal in which the speaker remains outside the scene and logically explores causal relations. These pragmatic and cognitive differences also affect the compatibility of the two expressions: limited substitution is possible in contexts with minimal emotional involvement and neutral discourse conditions, while substitution becomes constrained as emotional reactions intensify or discourse formality increases. In conclusion, the contrast between zěnme and wèishénme does not lie merely in surface-level expression but reflects an integrated pragmatic–cognitive system shaped by the speaker’s epistemic positioning, emotional involvement, and discourse context.
