국문 초록

이 연구는 넬 나딩스(Nel Noddings)의 『돌봄』(1984)을 돌봄 윤리의 형성기로 규정하고, 그 사상적 연속성과 불연속성에 미친 밀턴 마이어로프(Milton Mayeroff)의 철학적 영향을 분석한다. 나딩스의 후기 윤리가 레비나스적 타자 윤리와 제도적 차원으로 확장된 반면, 마이어로프의 ‘신뢰와 성장을 바탕으로 한 삶의 방식으로서의 돌봄’ 개념은 그녀의 관계적 존재론 형성에 깊은 영향을 주었다. 두 사상가는 듀이의 영향을 받아, 자아와 타자가 상호적으로 구성되는 역동적 과정으로서 돌봄을 이해한다.

영문 초록

This study situates Nel Noddings’ Caring as a formative phase in care ethics and examines the lines of continuity and discontinuity shaped by Milton Mayeroff’s philosophy. While Noddings’ later ethics expanded toward institutional dimensions, Mayeroff’s conception of care as a “way of life”, grounded in trust and growth, decisively informed her relational ontology. Drawing on Dewey, both thinkers conceive care as a dynamic process through which self and other are mutually constituted. Their divergence lies in focus: Mayeroff emphasizes care primarily as a temporal process of sustained growth, while Noddings foregrounds the immediacy of consciousness—engrossment and motivational displacement— and the cared-for’s response as the completion of care. This reframing shifts care from a personal virtue to a reciprocal and responsive relation that extends into institutional and civic life, thereby establishing care as a moral and educational structure through which ethical relations are co-created.
