Study on the Impact Mechanism of Digital Trade on the Resilience of Supply Chain and Industrial Chain

Purpose – Grounded in the context of global industrial chain digitalization, this study conducts a comparative analysis between China and Korea to empirically assess the differential impacts of digital trade on supply chain resilience, uncover the mediating role of technological innovation, and explore regional heterogeneity, with the aim of addressing practical needs at both academic and policy levels. Design/Methodology – First, The entropy method is employed to assess the levels of industrial chain resilience and digital trade across provinces in China and Korea; Second, analyze digital trade’s impact on supply chain resilience using 2013–2023 panel data from China’s 31 and Korea’s 17 provinces via fixed-effects models; Third, introduce a technological innovation effect variable to test whether technological innovation serves as a mediating mechanism in the relationship between digital trade and industrial chain resilience. Findings – First, digital trade significantly enhances industrial chain resilience in both China and Korea, with China exhibiting a stronger effect, likely attributable to its larger digital economy and more comprehensive industrial structure. Second, technological innovation serves as a common transmission mechanism. Third, regional heterogeneity reveals distinct patterns: China’s western regions benefit from pronounced late-mover advantages, while Korea’s non- capital regions demonstrate greater potential for industrial upgrading—both reflecting how developmental stage differences moderate the impact of digital trade. Originality/value – This study contributes to the literature in terms of research perspective and methodology. It offers a novel comparative analysis of digital trade and industrial chain resilience, focusing on China and Korea—two economies with significant yet distinct developmental trajectories. Research methodology employing a fixed-effects panel regression model, these efforts not only advance theoretical understanding but also provide actionable insights for policymakers aiming to strengthen industrial chain resilience in the face of global uncertainties.
