본 논문은 지난 150년간 동아시아에서 전개된 독일 학문의 영향력과 그 수용 과정을 분석하고, 세계화 및 디지털 전환기 속에 놓인 독일사 연구의 새로운 방향성을 탐색한다. 연구는 독일과 동아시아의 관계를 네 시기로 구분하여 고찰한다. 첫째, 19세기 말부터 1945년까지 독일이 의학, 법학, 철학 등 전 분야에서 동아시아의 절대적 모델 역할을 했던 ‘일방향적 지식 전이’ 시기를 다룬다. 둘째, 제2차 세계대전 이후 독일의 학문적 패권이 미국으로 넘어갔음에도 불구하고, 동아시아 지식인들 사이에서 독일사가 비판적 성찰의 모델로서 여전히 ‘일방적 동경’의 대상으로 남았던 과정을 분석한다. 셋째, 2000년대 이후 세계화의 진전과 이주 사회로의 변화에 따라 국가 서사를 넘어선 ‘글로벌 히스토리’로서의 독일사로의 인식 전환을 살핀다. 마지막으로 인공지능(AI)과 디지털 기술의 발전이 언어 장벽을 허물고 독일사 연구의 민주화를 이끄는 현상을 진단한다. 결론적으로 본고는 독일사가 더 이상 독일인만의 전유물이 아닌, 전 세계 연구자가 공유하는 보편적 연구 대상임을 강조하며 독일 학계의 개방적 태도 변화를 촉구한다.

영문 초록

Trajectories and Transformations of German History Studies in East Asia: From “One-Way Transfer” to “Global History” This paper analyzes the historical development of German academic influence in East Asia over the past 150 years and explores new perspectives on German history in the era of globalization and digital transformation. The study categorizes the relationship between Germany and East Asia into four distinct periods. First, it examines the era of “one-way knowledge transfer” (late 19th century to 1945), during which Germany served as an absolute model for East Asian modernization in fields such as medicine, philosophy, and engineering. Second, it discusses the post-WWII period where, despite the shift of academic hegemony to the United States, German history remained a subject of “unrequited fascination” and a model for critical self-reflection among East Asian scholars. Third, the paper highlights the recent shift toward “German History as Global History” (2000–2025), driven by increased human mobility and the deconstruction of national narratives. Finally, it addresses how AI and digital technologies are democratizing access to historical sources and dismantling linguistic barriers. The paper concludes that German history no longer belongs exclusively to Germans but is a shared global intellectual property, urging a shift in perception toward openness and global participation.
