남계(柟溪) 이중무(李重茂)의 한시 창작과 내면 의식

국문 초록

이 글은 조선 중기 이중무(李重茂, 1568∼1629)가 지은 한시를 바탕으로 내면 의식 을 고찰한 결과이다. 이중무는 의령에서 태어나 자랐고 임진왜란(壬辰倭亂) 이후 외가가 위 치한 합천 숭산(崇山)으로 이주해 외삼촌 박이문(朴而文, 1544∼1598)·박이장(朴而章, 1547∼1622) 문하에서 공부했다. 이중무는 이들의 학문적 성취와 정치적 활동을 가까이에 서 목도하며 스스로 미진한 성취를 성찰했다. 외가의 성취는 내적 기준이자 부담으로 작용 했고 이에 부응하지 못한 현실을 자조하는 모습이 표출된다. 다만 이중무의 고뇌는 단지 출 세를 지향하는 측면은 아니었다. 이중무의 한시에는 절기(節氣)·사물(事物) 등을 제재로 삼 은 작품이 여럿 간취된다. 절기 등을 제재로 삼은 시에는 백성들을 염려하는 경세의식이 드 러나고, 사물을 두고 지은 시에는 스스로의 절의를 견지하는 일종의 신념이 나타난다. 이는 평생의 고뇌가 단지 명리를 추구한 것이 아니라 자신의 지향이 현실과 괴리된 측면이 있음 을 보여준다. 이중무는 과거를 포기하고 마침내 김굉필(金宏弼)의 유지(遺址)로 나아가 소 학당(小學堂)을 경영했다. 이를 복원하는 사업은 단순한 추모의 영역을 넘어 사림파(士林 派)의 학맥을 계승하는 의지의 구현이라 할 수 있다. 이중무는 소학당을 통해 벗들과 교유 하고 강학을 전개하며 자신만의 삶을 구가했다. 이후 소학당은 회산서원(會山書院)으로 사 액되었고 이중무는 이곳에 봉향되는 영예를 얻었다. 이러한 역사적 과정은 이중무를 사림 파의 학맥을 계승한 주목할 만한 인물로 평가해야 함을 증언하고 있다.

영문 초록

This study examines the poetic world and intellectual orientation of Namgye Lee Jungmu (1568–1629) through an analysis of his Sino-Korean poetry. Born in Uiryeong, Lee relocated to Sungsan in Hapcheon during the Imjin War and developed close scholarly relationships with his maternal uncles, Park Imun and Park Ijang. Their achievements and scholarly lineage became both an aspiration and a source of internal pressure for him, shaping the introspective and self-effacing tone frequently found in his poems. His feelings of inadequacy, reflections on unrealized ambitions, and emotional responses toward his maternal relatives recur throughout his works, revealing the deep interplay between personal biography and poetic sentiment. This article contextualizes these poetic features within Lee’s familial background, postwar life transitions, and lifelong pursuit of learning. Lee’s poetry is further distinguished by its use of seasons, weather, and objects as major themes that embody political awareness and moral reflection. His poems on typhoons, droughts, and other natural phenomena express concern for the livelihood of common people and the stability of the state, indicating a strong patriotic consciousness despite his lack of official position. Moreover, through symbolic objects such as bamboo or pine trees, he articulated values of integrity, introspection, and self-cultivation. His reconstruction of Sohakdang and the restoration of Kim Gwangpil’s former site demonstrate his active engagement in sustaining the scholarly traditions of the Sarim lineage. This study argues that Lee Jungmu’s poetic works serve not only as literary texts but also as significant evidence of intellectual practice and cultural continuity among regional literati in mid-Joseon.
