영남 남인 高仁繼(1564-1647)의 향촌 활동과 관직 생활 - 『月峯日錄』을 중심으로

국문 초록

이 글은 연대기 사료에서 단조롭게 언급된 고인계라는 인물을 일기를 통해서 재조명한 것이다. 조선시대 관료제 연구는 유명인 중심의 인물사 연구인 경우가 많아, 평범한 관료들의 관직 생활 연구는 미흡한 편이다. 이는 사료의 부족에 기인한다. 다행히 고인계는 『월봉일록』을 남겼고, 다양한 사찬 자료들을 고인계라는 인물이 그 시대를 어떻게 살아갔는지 추적할 수 있었다. 그의 선대는 남귀여가혼의 풍습에 따라 경기도에서 용궁현을 거쳐 산양현에 이거했다. 영남에 정착한 이후 이 가계는 임란 의병 활동과 전후 향촌 정비 사업에적극적으로 참여하며 지역 사회의 기반을 다졌다. 고인계가 그 핵심적인 역할을 수행했다. 고인계는 종전 후 넓게는 상주목 一鄕에서, 좁게는 屬縣 산양현에서 향촌 활동을 전개했다. 전자에서는 지역의 첫 서원인 도남서원 창설과 향안을 복구해 家格 을 높였고, 후자에서는 속현의 유향소로 기능한 산양수계소를 정비를 주도했다. 특히 후자의 사례는 조선 후기 향촌 사회의 특수성을 파악할 수 있는 매우 유의미한성과로 판단된다. 『월봉일록』을 토대로 살핀 고인계의 관직 생활은 이 시기 영남 남인의 지난한여정을 생생히 엿볼 수 있었다. 광해군 대는 말직에 종사하다가 역모에 피화가 되었고, 인조반정 이후에는 환갑이 넘은 나이에 충청 도사에 부임해 8개월간 49개 고을을 순행했다. 마지막 관직인 예안 현감에서는 본분을 지키는 처신을 보여주었다. 역사 인물을 평가할 때는 학문과 행적이 공익에 기여했는지, 시대적·사회적 소임에 충실했는지를 기준으로 삼아야한다. 16세기 후반 17세기 전반을 살았던 고인계는 임란 창의와 향촌 복구에 앞장섰고, 노령에도 목민관으로서의 책무를 다한 인물로 평가할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This article reexamines the figure of Go In-gye, who was only briefly mentioned in chronological historical records, through his diary. Research on the bureaucracy of the Joseon Dynasty often centers on prominent figures, leaving studies of the official careers of ordinary bureaucrats relatively scarce. This stems from a lack of historical sources. Fortunately, Go In-gye left behind the Wolbong Ilrok (Monthly Peak Diary), and various private records allowed us to trace how this individual lived through his era. His ancestors migrated from Gyeonggi Province to Sanyang County via Yonggung County, following the custom of marrying into a family from a different region. After settling in Yeongnam, this lineage actively participated in the Righteous Army activities during the Imjin War and in post-war rural reconstruction projects, solidifying their foundation within the local community. Go In-gye played a central role in this process. After the war, Go In-gye engaged in rural activities broadly within the Sangju Province region and more narrowly within the subordinate county of Sanyang. In the former, he elevated his family's status by founding the region's first seowon, the Donam Seowon, and restoring the hyang-an (local council). In the latter, he spearheaded the reorganization of the Sanyang Sugye-so, which functioned as the county's Confucian academy. The latter case, in particular, is judged to be a highly significant achievement for understanding the unique characteristics of late Joseon rural society. Reviewing Go In-gye's official career based on the Wolbong Ilrok vividly reveals the arduous journey of the Yeongnam Namin faction during this period. During the Gwanghaegun era, he served in minor posts before being implicated in a conspiracy. After the Injo Restoration, he was appointed as the provincial inspector of Chungcheong at over sixty years old, touring 49 counties over eight months. In his final post as magistrate of Yean County, he demonstrated conduct faithful to his duties. When evaluating historical figures, the criteria should be whether their scholarship and deeds contributed to the public good and whether they faithfully fulfilled their duties to their era and society. Go In-gye, who lived from the late 16th to the early 17th century, can be assessed as a figure who spearheaded the resistance against the Japanese invasions and the restoration of rural communities, and who, even in his advanced age, fulfilled his responsibilities as a local administrator.
