관찰하는 뇌와 관찰되는 뇌가 동일할 때, 재현의 논리는 어떻게 작동하는가? 본 연구는2010년 이후 fMRI, EEG, MRI 등 신경영상기술이 예술적 매체로 전유되면서 발생한 미학적･존재론적 전환을 분석한다. 수잔 앨드워스(Susan Aldworth), 안젤라 팔머(Angela Palmer), 앤드류 카니(Andrew Carnie), 루시아나 헤일(Luciana Haill)의 작업을 통해 과학데이터가 예술 표현으로 번역되는 과정에서 나타나는 의미론적 변이를 규명한다. 메스 없이 뇌를 들여다보는 이 기술은 레오나르도 다빈치 이래 확립된 침습적 해부학적 전통과근본적으로 단절하며, 신경과학 고유의 자기참조적 구조를 통해 데카르트적 주체-객체 이원론을 해체한다. 이는 개별 의식 중심의 근대적 주체성에서 기술 매개적 포스트휴먼 주체성으로의 존재론적 이행을 의미한다. 연구 결과, 뇌과학 기반 예술은 기술이 인간 존재의 조건으로 내재화된 시대에 자기인식의 역설을 가시화하며, 현대 미학의 인식론적 토대를 재구성하는 중요한 문화적 실천임을 논증한다.

영문 초록

When the observing brain and the observed brain are identical, how does the logic of representation operate? This study analyzes the aesthetic and ontological transformations arising from the artistic appropriation of neuroimaging technologies—fMRI, EEG, and MRI—in contemporary art since 2010. Through examination of works by Susan Aldworth, Angela Palmer, Andrew Carnie, and Luciana Haill, the research elucidates the semantic mutations occurring as scientific data translates into artistic expression. These non-invasive technologies fundamentally rupture the tradition of invasive anatomical investigation established since Leonardo da Vinci, dismantling the Cartesian subject-object dualism through neuroscience's inherently self-referential structure. This transformation marks an ontological shift from modern subjectivity centered on individual consciousness to technologically mediated posthuman subjectivity. The findings demonstrate that neuroscience-based art constitutes a significant cultural practice that transcends mere visual experimentation, rendering visible the fundamental paradoxes of self-knowledge in an era where technological mediation has become intrinsic to the condition of human existence, thereby reconstituting the epistemological foundations of contemporary aesthetics.
