국문 초록

본 연구는 서애 류성룡을 연구하는 전문가 7인에게 한국형 리더십이론이 제시한 8 요인에 대해서 평가하게 한 후, 그 결과를 가지고 성공과 실패를 예측할 목적으로 판별 분석을 실시하였다. 분석한 결과, 류성룡은 “성공한 리더”로판별되었다. 구체적으로, 국가 관련 요인들인 미래비전(4.86)과 환경변화(4.71) 의 점수가 높았고, 리더 자신 관련 요인들인 자기긍정(4.57), 성취열정(4.57), 솔선수범(5.0)의 점수도 높게 나타났지만, 하향온정(4.43), 상향적응(4.29), 수평조화(4.29) 등 인간관계 요인들의 점수는 상대적으로 낮았다. 전체적으로는4.29∼5.0의 대단히 높은 분포(평균 4.59)를 보였다. 특히, 류성룡은 솔선수범에서 5점 만점을 받음으로써 솔선수범이 그의 리더십 평가에 있어 특별한 강요인이라는 사실이 밝혀졌다. 아울러, 8 요인 각각이 문헌에 나타나는 빈도가크게 다르다는 점, 솔선수범이 갖는 강력한 영향력, 그리고 위기상황에서 이념적 논리보다는 상황적 필요가 행동을 지배했다는 점들을 논의하였다. 연구의한계와 향후의 방향을 논하였다.

영문 초록

The current study conducted a discriminant analysis with the data generated by 7 experts who have years’ records on Ryu Seong-Ryong studies in an effort to find if he had been a success or failure. As a result, it was found that Ryu SeongRyong was accredited to be “a successful leader.” Specifically, high scores were obtained on national factors such as Future Vision(4.86) and Environmental Change(4.71), followed by leader-centric factors as in Self-Affirmation(4.57), Passion for Success(4.57), and Leading by Example(5.0), whilst relatively lower scores on relational factors like Upward Adaptation(4.29), Downward Benevolence(4.43), and Lateral Harmony(4.29). Overall, the dispersion of factor averages span from 4.29 to 5.0 with the total average of 4.59. In particular, Ryu had 5.0 on Leading by Example(the 5.0 scale), which can be interpreted that the factor was his special merit. In addition, I have identified a few implications of the present study including the number of manifestations of each factor in classical writings of Ryu Seong-Ryong, strong and lingering nature of the Leadingby-Example’s effect, and mandatory influence of situational factors on leader behavior above and beyond ideological ones under emergency situations like war. Study limitations along with future research directions are also discussed.
