理性과 感性의 관계로 본 朝鮮後期文學論

국문 초록

본 연구는 이성과 감성의 관점에서 조선후기 天機論의 논리를 정교화한 崔漢綺의 <收得發用有源委>의 주장과 칸트와 헤겔로 대표되는 독일 미학 담론의 접점을 확인하는 작업이다. 조선후기의 천기론은 성정론을 그 磁場안에 끌어 들이고 외연을 확대하였다. 김창협의 천기론은‘性情之眞’을 말하였으나 ‘性情之正’적 요소를 완전히 버린 것은 아니었다. 이에 반하여 김창흡은‘人心之妙’도 천기의 일부가 될 수 있음을 주장하고 인간 존재를 도덕적 본성과 의무의 이행자에서 생명과 활기를 가진 자연적 존재로 인식하였다. 이렇게 인간이 가진 감성을 적극 인정하는 천기론이 조선후기 문학론에 활로를 열은 것은 분명하다. 그러나 천기론은 문학론에 있어 감성을 중시할 수 있는 이론적 준거를 제공하기도 하였지만 정연한 논리 체계를 갖추었다고 보기 어렵다. 또한 전대의 문학론에서 중요시하였던 도덕적 요소를 외면할 수 없는 것도 하나의 문제로 남을 수밖에 없었다. 근대 독일의 미학도 ‘감성적 인식의 학’이라고 정의하지만 역시 같은 고민을 안고 있었다. 그들은 감성의 영역인 미학에서 이성을 끌어안고 감성과 이성의 조화 혹은 통일을 지향하였다. 문학에 있어 도덕적 억압의 원인으로 작용되었던 주자의 ‘性情之正’ 뿐만 아니라 ‘順自然’을 추구한 원굉도마저도 자연의 합법칙성인 천리를 추구하였다는 점은 이성을 외면하지 않았다는 측면에서 근대 독일의 미학과 동일한 궤적이다. 천기론에서도 모호한 문제로 남았던 이성과 감성의 관계에 대한 진전된 논의가 바로 최한기의 <收得發用有源委>이다. 최한기는 감각에 관심을 두고 감성에서 이성을 도출해내는 단계를 논리적으로 풀이한다. 그리고 감성과 이성을 연결하는 기제로 神氣를 설정한다. 神氣는 칸트의 ‘초감성적 기체(das übersinnlich Substrat)’와도 유사한 역할을 한다. 그리고 神氣의 합리성을 공감에서 찾아 냈다는 것은 비스코의 ‘공통 감각’ 혹은 칸트의 ‘미적 공통 감각’과도 상통한다.

영문 초록

The aim of this study is to confirm the interface between the Seong-jeong-ron in the late Joseon Dynast, Choi, Han-ki(崔漢綺)'s argument about and the Germany aesthetic discourse represented by Kant and Hegel in terms of nature work between emotion and reason. The Cheon-ki-ron(天機論) in the late Joseon Dynasty drew the Seong-jeong-ron(性情論) into its magnetic field and expanded its detonation. Kim, Chang-hyeop presented ‘Insimjijeong’ in Cheon-ki-ron, but not discarded ‘Seongjeongjijeong’ element completely. On the contrary, Kim, Chang-heup argued that ‘Insimjimyo’ could be a part of ‘Cheonki’ and perceived a human's existence as a natural being having life and vitality from a performer of the moral nature and obligation. Thus, it's evident that Cheon-ki-ron, which positively acknowledged a human's emotion, found a way out for the literary theory in the late Joseon Dynasty. However, it's hard to judge the Cheon-ki-ron was equipped with the logical system that could be served as emotion-centric theoretical criteria in a literary theory. In addition, the failure to disregard the reason, which was regarded as important in the literary theory of the previous generations, could not but remain as an unsettled problem. Modern Germany's aesthetics is defined as “Science of Emotional Cognition”, but it also carried the same agony. They embraced the reason in the realm of emotion-aesthetics, and aimed for nature work or unity between emotion and reason. The fact even Wongwengdo who pursued not only 'Zhūzǐ’s ‘Seongjeongjijeong’, which was the cause of moral suppression, but also pure nature, pursued the legitimate natural law suggests the identical path with modern Germany's aesthetics from the perspective of not disregarding reason. It was Choi, Han-ki's who solved the question of emotion and reason logically, which Cheon-ki-ron failed to solve. Choi, Han-ki logically interpreted the stage of drawing forth reason from emotion with interest in sense. In addition, Choi set up spirit & energy as a mechanism linking emotion to reason. Spirit & Energy plays a role similar to Kant's ‘supersensible basic body’(das übersinnlich Substrat)as well. Further, the fact that the rationality of spirit & energy was found from compathy has something to do with even Bisco's ‘common sense’ or Kant's ‘aesthetic common sense.’
