사서(史書)를 통해 본 노구의 특성과 변이양상

국문 초록

본고에서는 우리 문학 속에 나타나는 할미의 원형을 밝히기 위한 작업의 하나로 사서(史書)에 나타나는 노구(老嫗)의 특성과 변이양상을 고찰해보았다. 연구방법으로 <삼국사기>에 나타난 노구의 성격이 <고려사>와 <조선왕조실록>에서 변화되는 양상을 살폈으며, 여기에 <삼국유사>, <순오지>, <율례요람> 등을 참고하여 정치한 해석을 시도했다. 그 결과, 노구는 고대사회에서는 왕가의 사람들을 양육하는 신성한 사제, 왕의 연분을 맺어주던 매파, 음지의 권력가였음을 알 수 있었다. 그러나 조선시대로 접어든 후에는 왕권의 언저리에 있는 사람, 천한 무당은 아니지만 무당의 업과 관련된 사람, 음행을 주선하는 포주, 이전에 가졌던 음지의 권력마저 박탈당하고 천대 받는 사람으로 나타났다. 그런데 노구에 대한 인식이 임진왜란 등의 전쟁을 거치면서 급격하게 변한 점을 볼 때, 전쟁 이후 여성에 대한 인식변화와 유교적 가부장제의 강화가 영향을 미친 것으로 보인다. 문학작품에서 할미가 경외의 대상이 되면서도 한편으로 풍자되는 것은 노구가 가진 역사와 함께 생각해 볼 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

This is the writing surveying Nogu (an old lady)’s personality and the changing patterns to inspect Nogu’s original form on the basis of history books. By this method, the main target of the study is Nogu’s character changing from one shown in Samgooksagi (a history book of three kingdoms) to one illustrated in Koryeosa (a history of Koryeo Dynasty) and the Annals of the Chosun Dynasty, especially looking into her characteristics in the latter of Chosun Dynasty with the reference books of Sunohji, Yulneyoram. As a result, Nogu (an old lady) was represented as a sacred priest taking care of royal people, a matchmaker of a king, an invisible being with power and a transforming shaman in the ancient society. In the former of Chosun Dynasty, however, she was stricken to a humble person hanging around the royal family, a not-vulgar exorcist performing magical things and a pimp instigating naughty deeds, in the end, to the figure of a low-minded person deprived of the power having before. Considering the rapidly changing perception of Nogu after Imjinwaeran (Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592), in the meantime, it was attributed to the changed view of women and the more established Confucian patriarchal system. The image of Nogu was transformed from sacred to humble and afforded a basis for a satire in Korean literature. The history of a humble Nogu is reflected on a sarcasm of Halmi in Korean folk play.
