There was no shade anywhere. The terrible glare of the summer sun beat down upon the whole length of the wooden platform at Amberley. Hot as was the dry, bracing air, it was incomparable with the blistering intensity of heat reflected from the planking, which burned through to the soles of the feet of the uniformed man who paced its length, slowly, patiently.
This sunburnt, gray. eyed man, with his loose, broad shoulders, his powerful, easy. moving limbs, seemed quite indifferent to the irritating climatic conditions of the moment. Even the droning of the worrying mosquitoes had no power to disturb him. Like everything else unpleasant in this distant northwestern land, he accepted these things as they came, and brushed them aside for the more important affairs he was engaged upon.
He gazed out across the wide monotony of prairie with its undulating wavelets, a tawny green beneath the scorching summer sun.

리지웰 컬럼(Ridgwell Cullum)은 시드니 그로브스 버가드(Sidney Groves Burghard)의 필명으로, 1867년 8월 13일 런던에서 태어나 1943년 11월 3일에 사망한 영국 작가이다. 그는 17세에 영국을 떠나 남아프리카 트란스발에서 금을 찾아 나섰고, 이후 캐나다 유콘 지역에 정착했다가 미국 몬태나에서 목장을 운영하기도 했다. 1903년 첫 소설 『The Devil's Keg』를 발표한 후 영국에 정착하여 전업 작가가 되었으며, 30년 이상에 걸쳐 주로 미국과 캐나다의 인적이 드문 지역을 배경으로 한 모험 소설을 다수 집필했다. 그의 작품들은 당대 인기 서부 작가 제인 그레이(Zane Grey)와 견줄 만한 판매량과 인기를 누렸으며, 여러 작품이 영화로 제작되기도 했다.

Ridgwell Cullum was the pseudonym of Sidney Groves Burghard, a British writer born in London on August 13, 1867, who died on November 3, 1943. He left England at seventeen to prospect for gold in the Transvaal, later settling in the Yukon region of Canada, and eventually became a successful cattle rancher in Montana. After publishing his first novel, The Devil's Keg, in 1903, he settled in Britain and became a full-time writer, producing numerous adventure novels over more than 30 years, typically set in sparsely populated regions of the United States or Canada. His works rivaled those of Zane Grey in sales and popularity, and several of his novels were adapted into films.
