Vast glaciers shimmering jewel. like in the steely light of the semi. Arctic evening. Black belts of gloomy pinewoods on the lower slopes of the mountains; the trees snow. burdened, but black with the darkness of night in their melancholy depths. The earth white; snow to the thickness of many feet on all. Life none; not a beast of the earth, nor a fowl of the air, nor the hum of an insect. Solitude. Cold––grey, pitiless cold. Night is approaching.
The hill ranges which backbone the American continent––the northern extremity of the Rocky Mountains. The barrier which confronts the traveller as he journeys from the Yukon Valley to the Alaskan seaboard. Land where the foot of man but rarely treads. And mid. winter.
But now, in the dying light of day, a man comes slowly, painfully into the picture. What an atom in that infinity of awful grandeur. One little life in all that desert of snow and ice. And what a life. The poor wretch was swathed in furs; snow. shoes on his feet, and a long staff lent his drooping figure support. His whole attitude told its own tale of exhaustion.

리지웰 컬럼(Ridgwell Cullum)은 시드니 그로브스 버가드(Sidney Groves Burghard)의 필명으로, 1867년 8월 13일 런던에서 태어나 1943년 11월 3일에 사망한 영국 작가이다. 그는 17세에 영국을 떠나 남아프리카 트란스발에서 금을 찾아 나섰고, 이후 캐나다 유콘 지역에 정착했다가 미국 몬태나에서 목장을 운영하기도 했다. 1903년 첫 소설 『The Devil's Keg』를 발표한 후 영국에 정착하여 전업 작가가 되었으며, 30년 이상에 걸쳐 주로 미국과 캐나다의 인적이 드문 지역을 배경으로 한 모험 소설을 다수 집필했다. 그의 작품들은 당대 인기 서부 작가 제인 그레이(Zane Grey)와 견줄 만한 판매량과 인기를 누렸으며, 여러 작품이 영화로 제작되기도 했다.

Ridgwell Cullum was the pseudonym of Sidney Groves Burghard, a British writer born in London on August 13, 1867, who died on November 3, 1943. He left England at seventeen to prospect for gold in the Transvaal, later settling in the Yukon region of Canada, and eventually became a successful cattle rancher in Montana. After publishing his first novel, The Devil's Keg, in 1903, he settled in Britain and became a full-time writer, producing numerous adventure novels over more than 30 years, typically set in sparsely populated regions of the United States or Canada. His works rivaled those of Zane Grey in sales and popularity, and several of his novels were adapted into films.
