It moves among people with money and leisure, and its concern is what such a life does to a woman who has been handed everything except a reason to get up in the morning. Rachael Breckenridge is that woman — a wife, a stepmother, and an object of steady interest to everyone in her set.
The novel opens on a bright April afternoon at the Long Island Country Club, where the season has begun and the members are out in force. Norris fills the scene with easy talk and small performances, and into it she places Rachael and her stepdaughter Billy. We learn that Rachael is married to Clarence Breckenridge, and it becomes apparent soon enough that the marriage has settled into something neither companionable nor quite finished. Clarence is comfortable in a way that requires nothing of him. Rachael has the harder task: managing a stepdaughter, a household, and a circle of acquaintance that observes and reports on everything.
What the first chapter establishes is a world that glitters and gives nothing back. Rachael wants more than to be well thought of, and she has not yet worked out what that more might be. The novel proceeds from exactly that unrest.

The day had opened so brightly, in such a welcome wave of April sunshine, that by mid-afternoon there were two hundred players scattered over the links of the Long Island Country Club at Belvedere Bay; the men in thick plaid stockings and loose striped sweaters, the women's scarlet coats and white skirts making splashes of vivid color against the fresh green of grass and the thick powdering of dandelions. It was Saturday, and a half-holiday; it was that one day of all the year when the seasons change places, when winter is visibly worsted, and summer, with warmth and relaxation, bathing and tennis and motor trips in the moonlight, becomes again a reality.
There was a real warmth in the sunshine to-day, there was a fragrance of lilac and early roses in the idle breezes. "Hot!" shouted the players exultantly, as they passed each other in the green valleys and over the sunny mounds. "You bet it's hot!" agreed stout and glowing gentlemen, wiping wet foreheads before reaching for a particular club, and panting as they gazed about at the unbroken turf, melting a few miles away into the new green of maple and elm trees, and topped, where the slope rose, by the white columns and brick walls of the clubhouse.

Norris begins at a golf club, and it is a shrewd choice. April light, cut grass, the light talk people exchange while appearing to do nothing at all — and beneath it, everything observed, weighed, and remembered. That is the world Rachael Breckenridge lives in.
Rachael is among the most adult figures Norris created. She has not been betrayed by her husband so much as neglected by him, and that distinction is what makes the novel interesting. There is no dramatic event to break the marriage; there is only the prospect of growing old beside a man who asks nothing of her. Norris renders this quiet attrition with real accuracy. The relationship with Billy, the stepdaughter, is equally well done — affection and duty and awkwardness mixed together, never resolving into anything simple.
In its later sections the book moves into territory that was bold for its day: divorce, and what a woman may claim afterward. The moral accounting of the ending reads as constrained now, and the price exacted from Rachael for her choices feels unevenly distributed. Yet the novel is honest to the end about what it cost one woman to stand between being loved and being a person who wants something.

Kathleen Thompson Norris was among the most widely read popular novelists in America during the first half of the twentieth century. Born in San Francisco in 1880, she grew up in comfortable circumstances until, at nineteen, she lost both parents within a matter of weeks and found herself responsible for her younger siblings. For several years afterward she took whatever work she could find — bookkeeper, shop clerk, teacher, newspaper reporter — and the experience of labor and near-poverty would later supply the ground beneath much of her fiction.
In 1909 she married the writer Charles Gilman Norris and moved to New York. Her first novel, Mother, appeared in 1911 and brought her immediate recognition from critics and general readers alike; before long she was one of the best-paid writers in the country. Over the next half-century she produced more than eighty novels along with a great many short stories.
Her books are, for the most part, about ordinary women: the young woman caught between work and love, the daughter trying to climb out of poverty, the wife enduring the disillusionments of marriage. She was faulted at times for sentimentality and for endings that came too easily, but her willingness to treat women's economic independence and the inequalities of domestic life as serious subjects won her a devoted readership, particularly among women. In her later years she returned to California and spoke publicly against war and capital punishment. She died in San Francisco in 1966.
