The Black Flemings, by Kathleen Thompson Norris, comes from the early years of the twentieth century. It opens with David Fleming making his way back to Wastewater, the family house on the coast — a place that holds his childhood and something less comfortable besides. Waiting for him are his Aunt Flora and, shortly, his cousin Gabrielle, and among the three of them lies a family history that no one has ever fully explained.
Norris takes her time with the approach. David comes up on the old estate remembering things he had not meant to remember, and what he feels is neither simple homecoming nor simple dread but a mixture of the two. The house is drawn with real force: a heavy, beautiful, decaying pile above a wild stretch of coast, the sea working at the rocks below it. Wastewater is not merely where the novel happens. It presses on everyone inside it.
The reunion with Flora is cordial and slightly guarded. Preparations are made for Gabrielle's arrival. Nothing is said outright, but the reader understands quickly that something in this family's past has never been settled, and that the house has been keeping it. From this the novel builds its real concern — what an inheritance consists of, and how much of it a person is obliged to accept.

Once through the dark old iron gates, he seemed to have left the warm and friendly autumn day, the warm and friendly world, behind him.
David Fleming laughed half aloud at the fancy and stepped back into the rambling country road, where wheel tracks were so quickly obliterated in the loose-drifting sand, to contrast once more, for his own amusement, the peaceful dreaming landscape in the afternoon sunlight and the sinister shadows of Wastewater.
Five miles away along the rugged coast lay Crowchester, the little fishing village whose activities tinged the fresh salty air, even here, with the odour of salted fish. Between Crowchester and Wastewater, beside whose forbidding great gates he stood, ran the irregular road, rising through dunes, skirting wind-twisted groves of pine and fir, disappearing into ragged hollows to emerge again on turfy bluffs, and finally winding in here toward the old brick house that lay hidden behind these high walls.

This is among the darkest books Norris wrote. In place of her usual offices and drawing rooms stands Wastewater, an old house above the sea — a name that tells you a good deal before the story begins.
The house is the novel's true protagonist. Norris does not use it as scenery; she sets it over the characters like a weight. You feel this from David's first approach, when what rises in him is neither longing nor fear but the two grown into each other. The surf working at the rock below, the damp rooms, a family history no one will explain: she borrows the machinery of the Gothic without ever summoning an actual ghost. The haunting she cares about is the one called inheritance.
The pace is slow, and an attentive reader will guess the central secret well before it is offered. But the question the book asks has not lost its force — how much of what we are given may we refuse — and it is Gabrielle who carries that question forward with her whole life.

Kathleen Thompson Norris was among the most widely read popular novelists in America during the first half of the twentieth century. Born in San Francisco in 1880, she grew up in comfortable circumstances until, at nineteen, she lost both parents within a matter of weeks and found herself responsible for her younger siblings. For several years afterward she took whatever work she could find — bookkeeper, shop clerk, teacher, newspaper reporter — and the experience of labor and near-poverty would later supply the ground beneath much of her fiction.
In 1909 she married the writer Charles Gilman Norris and moved to New York. Her first novel, Mother, appeared in 1911 and brought her immediate recognition from critics and general readers alike; before long she was one of the best-paid writers in the country. Over the next half-century she produced more than eighty novels along with a great many short stories.
Her books are, for the most part, about ordinary women: the young woman caught between work and love, the daughter trying to climb out of poverty, the wife enduring the disillusionments of marriage. She was faulted at times for sentimentality and for endings that came too easily, but her willingness to treat women's economic independence and the inequalities of domestic life as serious subjects won her a devoted readership, particularly among women. In her later years she returned to California and spoke publicly against war and capital punishment. She died in San Francisco in 1966.
