“Seventy-five per cent, of calves,” he murmured, glancing out at the sunlit yards. “Say, it’s been an elegant round-up.” Then his enthusiasm rose and found expression. “It’s the finest, luckiest ranch in Montana––in the country. Ridgwell Cullum was the pseudonym of Sidney Groves Burghard, a British writer born in London on August 13, 1867, who died on November 3, 1943. He left England at seventeen to prospect for gold in the Transvaal, later settling in the Yukon region of Canada, and eventually became a successful cattle rancher in Montana. After publishing his first novel, The Devil's Keg, in 1903, he settled in Britain and became a full-time writer, producing numerous adventure novels over more than 30 years, typically set in sparsely populated regions of the United States or Canada. His works rivaled those of Zane Grey in sales and popularity, and several of his novels were adapted into films.
