▶ Chapter I. Of Value. §1. Definitions of Value in Use, Exchange Value, and Price. It is evident that, of the two great departments of Political Economy, the production of wealth and its distribution, the consideration of Value has to do with the latter alone; and with that only so far as competition, and not usage or custom, is the distributing agency. ▷ 제1장. 가치. §1. 사용가치, 교환가치, 가격의 정의. 정치경제학의 두 가지 주요 분야인 부의 생산과 분배 중에서 가치에 대한 고려가 후자에만 관련된다는 것은 분명합니다. 그리고 사용법이나 관습이 아닌 경쟁에 한해서만 배포 기관이 됩니다.

▶ The use of a thing, in political economy, means its capacity to satisfy a desire, or serve a purpose. Diamonds have this capacity in a high degree, and, unless they had it, would not bear any price. Value in use, or, as Mr. De Quincey calls it, teleologic value, is the extreme limit of value in exchange. The exchange value of a thing may fall short, to any amount, of its value in use; but that it can ever exceed the value in use implies a contradiction; it supposes that persons will give, to possess a thing, more than the utmost value which they themselves put upon it, as a means of gratifying their inclinations. ▷ 정치경제학에서 사물의 사용은 욕구를 충족시키거나 목적을 달성하는 능력을 의미합니다. 다이아몬드는 이러한 능력을 고도로 갖고 있으며, 그것이 없다면 어떤 가격도 감당할 수 없을 것입니다. 사용가치, 또는 드 퀸시(De Quincey)가 말했듯이 목적론적 가치는 교환가치의 극단적인 한계입니다. 어떤 물건의 교환 가치는 그 사용 가치에 비해 부족할 수 있습니다. 그러나 그것이 사용 가치를 초과할 수 있다는 것은 모순을 의미한다. 그것은 사람들이 어떤 물건을 소유하기 위해 자신의 성향을 만족시키기 위한 수단으로 그 물건에 부여한 최대 가치보다 더 많은 것을 주거나 소유할 것이라고 가정합니다.

▶ §2. Conditions of Value: Utility, Difficulty of Attainment, and Transferableness. That a thing may have any value in exchange, two conditions are necessary. 1. It must be of some use; that is (as already explained), it must conduce to some purpose, satisfy some desire. No one will pay a price, or part with anything which serves some of his purposes, to obtain a thing which serves none of them. 2. But, secondly, the thing must not only have some utility, there must also be some difficulty in its attainment. ▷ §2. 가치의 조건: 유용성, 달성 난이도 및 양도 가능성. 어떤 물건이 교환 가치를 가지려면 두 가지 조건이 필요합니다. 1. 어느 정도 유용해야 합니다. 즉 (이미 설명했듯이) 어떤 목적을 달성하고 어떤 욕구를 충족시켜야 합니다. 어느 누구도 자신의 목적에 부합하지 않는 것을 얻기 위해 대가를 지불하거나 자신의 목적에 부합하는 어떤 것의 일부도 지불하지 않을 것입니다. 2. 그러나 둘째, 그 물건은 어느 정도 유용성을 가져야 할 뿐만 아니라 그것을 달성하는 데도 어느 정도 어려움이 있어야 합니다.

▶ §3. Commodities limited in Quantity by the law of Demand and Supply: General working of this Law. These being the three classes, in one or other of which all things that are bought and sold must take their place, we shall consider them in their order. ▶ 영국 런던(London, United Kingdom) 리덴홀 스트리트(Leadenhall Street) 동인도 회사(East India House)의 장기근속자?! : 존 스튜어트 밀은 동인도 회사(East India House)에서 1823년(17세)부터 1858년(52세)까지 무려 35년간 근무한 장기근속자입니다. 1858년은 동인도회사가 폐지된 해이니 밀은 그야말로 인생 전체를 한 회사에 몸담은 셈입니다. ▷ 동인도 회사는 월급은 센 반면 근무시간은 비교적 짧았기 때문에 밀이 직장생활과 집필을 병행하기에 최고의 환경을 제공하였으며, 실제로 밀의 작품이 이 시기에 여럿 발표되었습니다. ▷ 밀이 근무한 동인도회사의 위치는 정확하게 확인할 수는 없었으나, 런던에 위치한 동인도 회사는 1648년부터 런던 리덴홀 스트리트(Leadenhall Street)에 위치하였다는 기록을 찾을 수 있었습니다. 이후 주변의 주택을 인수하며 그 규모를 늘려갔습니다.
