In the present volumes will be found all the different collections we have enumerated, together with the various papers of the same author, that have been published in separate pamphlets, or inserted in foreign collections of his works, or in the Transactions of our own or of foreign philosophical societies, or in our own or foreign newspapers and magazines, as far as discoverable by the editor, who has been assisted in the research by a gentleman in America.

▶ The character of Dr. Franklin, as a philosopher, a politician, and a moralist, is too well known to require illustration, and his writings, from their interesting nature, and the fascinating simplicity of their style, are too highly esteemed, for any apology to be necessary for so large a collection of them, unless it should be deemed necessary by the individual to whom Dr. Franklin in his will consigned his manuscripts: and to him our apology will consist in a reference to his own extraordinary conduct.

▶ The proprietor, it seems, had found a bidder of a different description in some emissary of government, whose object was to withhold the manuscripts from the world, not to benefit it by their publication; and they thus either passed into other hands, or the person to whom they were bequeathed received a remuneration for suppressing them. ▶ 미국 건국의 아버지(Founding Fathers of the United States) 벤자민 프랭클린(Benjamin Franklin) : 미국은 크리스토퍼 콜럼버스(Christopher Columbus, 1450~1506)가 서유럽 최초로 발견한 신대륙에 1607년 영국인이 이주하기 시작하면서 영국의 식민지로 출발한 국가입니다. 영국과 프랑스의 대립을 틈타 1774년 7월, 미국은 영국으로부터 독립을 선언하였으며 이 과정에 공로가 큰 이들을 미국 건국의 아버지(Founding Fathers of the United States)이라 부릅니다. 미국 독립 선언에 서명을 한 56명의 대표단이 특히 중요하며, 이를 기반으로 미국 헌법이 제정되었습니다.

▷ 아버지가 56명이라니 좀 많기는 합니다만, 벤자민 프랭클린은 영국령 미국 보스턴에서 출생(1706)한 ‘이민자의 후예’로써 미국 독립 선언과 미국 헌법 제정 회의에 둘 다 서명한 8인의 하나였을 뿐 아니라, 4명의 주지사(존 디킨슨, 존 랭던, 존 러틀리지) 중 한 명으로 특히 주목할 만한 인물이 아닐 수 없습니다. 美 건국 과정에서 영국 식민지를 대표하는 대변인으로써 펜실베이니아 주 하원의장(1764), 미국의 제1대 우정장관(1775~1776), 펜실베이니아 주 제6대 행정위원회 위원장(1785~1788)을 비롯해 미국의 제1대 프랑스 주재 대사(1778~1785), 미국의 제1대 스웨덴 주재 대사(1782~1783) 등 요직을 두루 수행해, 퍼스트 아메리칸(The First American)이라 불렸습니다.

▶ 벤저민은 팔방미인(八方美人)?! : 벤저민 프랭클린은 팔방미인이란 칭호가 아깝지 않을 정도로 다양한 분야를 망라하며 활동한 인물입니다. 가난한 리처드의 연감(Poor Richard's Almanack, 1732)을 집필한 작가(Writer), 펜실베니아 가제트(the Pennsylvania Gazette)와 책을 출판한 창간인(Publisher) 겸 인쇄업자(Printer), 미국 최초의 우정장관(the first United States postmaster general)을 역임한 정치인(Politician)이자 정치가(Statesman), 과학자(Scientist)이자 발명가(Inventor), 유머리스트(Humorist), 도서관과 필라델피아 대학교(Academy and College of Philadelphia, 현 펜실베니아 대학교)를 설립한 시민운동가(Civic activist)이자 초대 총장(the first president), 미국을 대표하는 외교관(Diplomat), ……. 그 중에서도 가장 오래 수행한 본업은 역시 정치와 외교일 것입니다. 1764년 펜실베이니아 주 하원의장을 시작으로, 1788년까지 펜실베이니아 주와 미국의 장관직과 서유럽 주재 대사로 역임하였습니다.
