The Republic of Korea is commonly called the Korean Peninsula because territories are surrounded by the ocean to the east, west, and south, and it borders China and Siberia to the north.

Most of the territories of Korea are covered by mountainous terrains and there are very limited lands available for farming. The southern part of the Korean Peninsula is approximately 9,263㎢, but 6,711㎢ of lands are covered by mountainous areas.

The mountains take up 2/3 of the southern part and only about 4.4% of its total area can be used for agricultural purposes. Moreover, it is a high-density state with very high population density. The territories available per capita is only 2,200㎡ and only 53㎡ can be spared for each person to occupy for production and living.

Despite the narrow and limited territorial environment, the Korean ancestors laid roots on these beautiful lands and flourished the splendid cultural heritages that astonish the world today.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has been encouraging the nations around the world to designate and safeguard excellent cultural heritages as world cultural heritage by categorizing world cultural heritage into cultural heritages, memory of the world, intangible heritages, and natural heritages.

UNESCO has designated 30 artifacts from Korea as World Cultural Heritage. Among them, this book introduces Korea’s major cultural heritages including the Haeinsa Temple Janggyeong Panjeon, the Depositories of the Tripitaka Koreana Woodblocks, Jongmyo Shrine, Seokguram/ Bulguksa, Changdeokgung Palace Complex, Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, Gochang, Hwasun, and Ganghwa Dolmen Sites, Gyeongju Historic Areas, Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes, Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty, and Historic Villages of Korea: Hahoe and Yangdong.

I hope that children and adolescence can realize the universal value of glorious cultural heritages of Korea and annurture their knowledge and wisdom to create the cultural heritages of the new generation.

This book was published to introduce Korea’s world cultural heritages. In this book, Korea’s 35 cultural heritages registered in UNESCO are recorded. It introduces 10 cultural heritages and natural heritages, such as Bulguksa Temple, Jongmyo Shrine, Gyeongju Historic Areas, 10 Memories of the World like the Hunmin Jeongeum Manuscript, and 15 Intangible Cultural Heritages of Humanity like the Royal ancestral ritual in the Jongmyo shrine, and the Arirang. Moreover, it introduces General Yi Sun-shin’s Nanjung Ilgi and Saemaeul Movement, which are registered in UNESCO recently, and also North Korea’s cultural heritages, the Complex of the Koguryo Tombs and the Historical Monument and Sites in Kaesong, are introduced in this book.
Pictures in this book were taken by Kim Yong-Bum, Korea’s famous photographer and director of documentary film, and Yoo Han-Jun, a writer of juvenile stories, wrote explanation. Especially, since Kim Yong-Bum who has traveled the world by car and then made a film of world cultural heritages which was shown for 2 years on KBS, the major channel of Korea TV, has taken all these live and variety pictures, the book is more meaningful. You will find out all of the Korea’s cultural heritages with this valuable book.
